I've read posts and read posts until I'm blue in the face. Lots of good information. I'd really like to go with a hyd roller cam for my 462 buildup. The Lunati 288/296 looks interesting but I'd like some opinions from the experts here. Here's my combo:

454 .030 over
SpeedPro Hyper Pistons with a .100 dome
702 closed chambered heads 98cc with 2.19's, 1.88's, some port and chamber work.
Expecting around 10.2/1 compression
GM Dimple Rods
Edelbrock RPM intake
650 Double Pumper (I know, I'll upgrade)
Lunati 1.7 Roller Rockers
GM HEI
Hooker comp headers with 2" primaries
3" exhaust with flowmasters

My chevelle weighs 3710 with me in it. I've got 3.73's gears and a 3500 stall. I don't really want to twist it more than 6400 RPM's...

What other changes will I have to make? distributor gear? cam button? I'm running a Holley mechanical fuel pump, will this work?

I would like maximum power with decent street manners. Is a hyd roller suited for this?

Thank you and sorry for the long post.

Purs,

First off, this is not a long post.
Second, What are 'good street manners'? Do you have power brakes? If you do, you will need the cam on 114 LSA. With your combo, it should make 540-550 BHP about 6000.
If you have manual brakes and want that rough idle, drag-strip terror, get the cam on 108 LSA. It is not fun to drive in heavy traffic, as the car will be TOO responsive.
My son is converting his 1988 GTA TPI engine into a 355 at 10:1, Performer RPM, a 750 Holley, and my old SB288/296HR10. All the guys in the shop wanted him to get it on 108. His current cam in the stock TPI 350 is my old SB284HR12, 218 at .050, .492 valve lift, 112 LSA. I like this one very much.....
The Holley mech pump is OK, make sure all your gas lines are 1/2" ID, from tank to carb.
Ask, if you have more questions.....

Harold,

Decent street manners means that it will stay running when I stop at one of the two stop signs we have in my town. I don't have power brakes and there is no such thing as "heavy traffic" where I live... graemlins/hurray.gif
What are the lift and duration numbers on that cam? And while you are at it a part number for when I'm ready to order. graemlins/thumbsup.gif Are those the only 2 LSA that the cam is ground at?

My email is bpursley@esc14.net I've tried emailing you a couple of times but don't know if you're getting them or not.

Thanks again for the info!

110 LSa is a good compromise. I don't know if the aggressive profile of Harolds 276/284 lobe is available in a hyd roller, but that cam on a 110 would be "mildly agressive" in idle, and on a 108 would lope heavy. I know in a solid roller, you'll be sporting .660 lift, 247/253 duration.

Reason I bring it up is that it makes power in my 439 well past 6500, I shift at 6700. Its smaller than the 288/296 ( well we're comparing hyd and solids so I dont know).

With your setup, the 'smaller is better' angle might apply.

Harold, do you think Holley will let you shake loose a give-away cam for our Chevelle show? I'll speak to the marketing man at Holley, deliver tons of praise for their new cam designer, and see what he says.

Sorry to tread on your post here PURS.

Purs,

The 288/296HR can be ground on any LSA, I normally make them on 114. That cam is 236/244 at .050, .600/.600 valve lift. It is probably bigger than the 276/284F. So far, it has been extremely reliable, even with 1.8 rockers.
As far as LSAs go, the wider ones(114, 112) give a flatter torque band and a better idle and drivability in traffic. The tighter ones like 108 give more mid-range and pull harder at the strip, at a cost of low-speed drivability. Most people use 110 as a good compromise.
Sorry about my E-Mails, my Eudora has been messed up for a while, and I don't want to reload it because I don't want to lose the messages on it already.

Gene, I'll 'shake loose' a cam, if I have to provide it myself......
