Hey guys. New to this forum. I've had my 68 Malibu for about 8 years now and FINALLY got the balls and the money to swap out the 307 that was in it with a mid 90's 350. We left the 2 speed powerglide in it for now, but I'm really wanting to put in a 700R4 or a TH350. Was wondering if anyone else had put one of these transmissions in a Malibu and what kind of problems you encountered. Or if you had kit recommendations.
Thanks,
Nate

A TH350 is an easy swap.
A 700R4 is a larger transmission that give some people problems.
You get the benefit of a lower first gear and an overdrive.
A 200R4 is about the size of the 350. When built right it will stand up to the abuse of a 350 engine.

TH350 or 200R4 are almost direct bolt ins, with no driveshaft mods.

I've got a 68 also :)
an years ago installed a t350 to replace the P.G. a very worthwhile improvement !!
if I was doing it today .... I'd install a 200r4 as its the same size an a better gear spread also

The 200 R4 is a direct bolt in for the PG. I had to move the Xmember back in my 69, but the holes were already there.
I have a stock built 2004r from a mid 80s Olds that lives just fine behind my 330 hp 350.
With the addition of a nicely built qjet my gas mileage was in the low 20s.

I have a 700R4 in my 70 SS 454 Sta. Wgn. It has been behind 3 B.B.s a 396--454-now as of march a 468.
Its a bolt in. Stock items used.
1--307 Cooler lines bolt direct to the 700--DONE
2--stock colum shift, I removed the " U " shaped shifter from the 350 , bolted it to the 700.--DONE
3--move crossmember back to stock holes and bolt the 700 in.--DONE
4-- shorten D-Shaft about 2" (around $40.00)
5--Set up TV cable---Very E-Z
6-- your done
I have had the same 700 in the wagon since 2002, Drive it everywhere. I live near Pittsburgh, Pa. Went to the Woodward Cruise in Detroit last weekend. At 75 MPH the Tach says 1950 RPMs.
Drove it to the Can -Am show in Grand Island N.Y. Used 14 Gallons of gas to go 276 miles or 19.50 MPG. The rear is a 3:08.
I have been told 700R4s are junk and are no good, Mine has been all over the East Coast and its 7 years old. I only race it once in a while--ITS MY DRIVER and TOURING car, A/C--P. Steering--P. D. Brakes--AM-FM.
I am a very happy camper.
