: Frame , what to use for a finish
TonyS Aug 19th, 08, 4:59 PM I am having the frame media blasted, what is the recommended product to use, POR 15 or prime it with self etching primer, seal it and paint it with catalyzed paint?
Thanks for the input;

You will get many different answers to this question. There are many choices and they all depend on what your looking for.
I sprayed mine with Eastwood rust inhibitor. Similar to POR 15, But easer to spray and no need for a protective top coat. Gives a good Semi-gloss finish. My frame (http://s217.photobucket.com/albums/cc210/furball8994/FRAME/) The top four are the end result...
You can also Epoxy prime then paint. OR POR 15 then paint, OR powder coat. OR.................
What are you looking for as a finished look?????

Epoxy primer reduced 10% is the way to go. It's bullet proof, looks great and is and a heck of a lot cheaper than POR15.

TonyS Aug 19th, 08, 7:19 PM I sorry, I should have mentioned that this is a frame off restoration.

paint a piece of frame with both , then hit with a hammer.. byr bye epoxy
hammer is = to rocks on the road
BlueSS454 Aug 19th, 08, 10:06 PM Forget that POR 15 junk and the Eastwood Rust Encapsulator. Both of those are only for rusty metal and their sole purpose is to cover up rust....that doesn't work, period.
Since you are already starting out the proper way by having the frame media blasted, the first coat should be Epoxy Primer. Once that is done and dry, you can use some body filler or metal glaze and fill in any rust pits and sand them flush with a DA sander. after that, apply a coat of high build primer, sand it with 400 grit dry, but be careful not to cut all the way through or you will have to reprime. Once that is done, lay down the top coat....60% gloss black. You can use spray bombs if you want or a single stage urethane paint with a flattening agent or you can get a quart of the Eastwood Chassis black, reduce it and spray it out of a gun...your choice.
rubadub Aug 19th, 08, 10:43 PM Or just go with straight epoxy, but use the good stuff ppg dp

I seriously doubt that anyone on this forum is going to drive their car on a road with rocks the size of hammers. ;)

y do ppl put stuff like this  who knows when your going to have to end driving on a surface like that.
sevt_chevelle Aug 20th, 08, 8:06 AM If powder coating was not an option I would do two coats of epoxy primer on the bare metal then topcoat the epoxy with a single stage urethane.
Although epoxy is a very tough product the SS urethane will hold up better to the elements then epoxy will. When left out into the elements epoxy can chaulk up or turn a different color. Meaning that black epoxy can turn into a grayish color. Urethane will not change color and is also very chip resistance, much more chip resistance then the enamel based chassis paints eastwoods and other resto houses sell.

Chucks68SS Aug 20th, 08, 8:53 AM I agree with Eric:thumbsup:
My friend repairs large boats for a living and swears by SS Concept.
I've see many of those things beat up on the bottom from sand, rocks
etc. and 95% of the time if the fiberglass is there so is the paint. Good
enough for me for any car frame.
