: dipstick keeps popping out
71 chevy Aug 19th, 08, 9:28 AM everytime I take the car out and run it to about 6000rpms I'll start getting smoke from the driver side header, I look and the dipstick has come out again.
someone said there is too much pressure. what can I do to relieve this.
Ive got a small breather on the driver side and a pcv on the passenger side.
Verle Aug 19th, 08, 9:50 AM What is the PCV hose hooked to?
The cause is excess pressure in the crank case.
Do a compression check and a leak down test, you may have excess blow by.

71 chevy Aug 19th, 08, 10:44 AM its hooked to the pcv port on the holley 770.
what is blow-by?
Brian_d Aug 19th, 08, 7:09 PM Blow by is air/fuel/exhaust gasses in the combustion chamber that "blow by" wore piston rings &/or cylinder walls. All engines have some amount of blow by but worn parts will allow more of it. Did you check the PCV valve?
animal69 Aug 19th, 08, 7:46 PM Sounds like you need more crankcase ventilation.

thanks for the explanation. they are new rings but I had some gapped optimistically(for nitrous)
the pcv rattles. I heard its working if it rattles. maybe I should get a new one. is there such a thing as a high flow pcv?
animal69, how do I go about getting more ventilation?
animal69 Aug 19th, 08, 8:34 PM Breathers in the valve covers.

you mean more breathers? I already have one on the pasenger side and a pcv in the driver side
DukeNuc Aug 19th, 08, 9:28 PM If your dipstick keeps popping out, it is just too short!:D
oldtimr Aug 19th, 08, 10:04 PM PCV doesn't do squat at wide open throttle. You need breathers.

you are right, but how come the passenger side is problematic when I have the breather on it and the pcv on the driver side
oldtimr Aug 19th, 08, 10:19 PM If you are thinking the problem should be on the opposite side of the breather sorry no cigar......the dipstick isn't common to a side, it just goes into the pan. All it knows is crankcase pressure.
71 chevy Aug 19th, 08, 10:37 PM k thanks. I will try a better breathing breather and add another one to driver side and see what happens
ssal396 Aug 20th, 08, 9:41 AM My dipstick used to pop at higher RPM, turned out to be a cracked piston, #6 came out in several pieces....I hope your luck is better then mine..
