Hi,
A friend has a newer HP Pavilion desktop and the computer won't turn on at all. Also, when plugging the power cable in, I have to move the red tab on the back of the power supply in order for there to be power. When I do that, the fan tries to spin and then stops. Anybody know what is wrong?
Thanks,
Ethan

Sounds like the power supply has quit.

Mike,
Well, today I was working on the computer again and with the main cable connected to the motherboard (I think ATX connector), the computer turned on. Did this to the optical drive and hard drive and all started working. But, when I went to put the last connector in, it won't turn on. The connector is small and square with only four slots to connect into the motherboard. Do you think its still the power supply? Or the motherboard? Everything else works, except for that darn connector. Here is a picture of the connector: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/12v4pinadapter.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html&h=365&w=355&sz=22&hl=en&start=35&um=1&tbnid=p8hrXAAr7Uog9M:&tbnh=121&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3DPower%2BSupply%2Bcable%26start%3D21%2 6ndsp%3D21%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN
It's the 9th one down. Could it be my CPU?
Thanks,
Ethan

PS , MB or CPU.
Check the voltage at the 4 pin connector to see if you have 12v there.
If that checks out ,could be the MB or the CPU.

Go to the motherboard makers web site and find the sheet for your board and see what the plug is for. You may just have one bad device.

Larry,
I found the website. It's an Asus M2N68-LA and Narra GL-8E. I saw the spec on HP's website, but where the slot is for the connector, you can't read what it says though.

Its the p4 power supply plug, Bad mb or pwr sply or both. Most HP's (not all)use a Bestec power supply and are absolutely one of the worst on the market. We replace probably 80 to 100 every year at the shop.
