I was going over my buildsheet for my 505 again and I noticed my 4.25" crank is a cast crank, not forged. Will this be a problem for racing in a 4000# car with a 600hp big block??? Would it even make sense for a cast crank to be put in this engine???

Depends on what you plan to shift at etc. personally forged sits better with me...on the other hand i have heard and have friends with 600+ Hp and torque with no problems with cast cranks, all depends on driving style...i have bad tendancies, including breaking things that are supposed to be unbreakable... graemlins/clonk.gif

i have had a few 500 -550 rwhp cars should be around the 600-650 hp figure at the flex plate.........on nitrous so im sure they would have been over the 600 hp mark at the flex plate.......and i have ran both cast and forged cranks in them.......and i didnt have no ill effects with them.......one was a 396 bbc that had a cast crank with an unbalanced bottom end and hitting 175 hp shot of nitrous.........nothing ever came about that motor other then it ran well.........

i dont care to spin the bbc more then 7200 rpms just because i build them on such very low budgets and when nitrous is used they never see that many rpms anyway since nitrous likes the lower rpms 6000 or so and they run faster that way..........

i think if i ever get around to building something more then just 500-550 rwhp motors i think i would go to a forged unit.......i think i have been pushing the limits of my parts so i think the 600 hp mark you could go either way........but i know for sure if its over 650 hp i would invest in a good forged unit......

i'm a gambling man, so if it breaks it breaks..........but i have yet to have a motor granade on me because of the lack of money i spend for parts.......

so this might be a time to ask yourself do you want to take a chance and see how long it will last in your 505 or just go and buy the forged that will have more of a chance to live in your engine.........

i think most here would say go forged......and i guess i would say go forged too..since its not my motor.........lol.but if it was mine and i already had the crank i would run it.....and if it broke then i guess it would give me a reason to build a bigger motor.......lol

It's not a high winding engine, peak power is at 5500 rpms and peak torque at 4200 (646 ft/lbs), the engine was built for torque and is at 600+ ft/lbs from about 3000 rpms and up. I probably will shift at 5600-5700. I just got this engine, and it was professionally built, I just got it in and plan on starting it for the first time this weekend, and don't really wanna have to replace the crank lol. It is for my daily driver '71 Monte Carlo, but it will be raced. Anymore opinions...

You will be fine with it.

If you were running a stick car with that weight and power, I would be a little concerned.

Hope the install is going good..

Thanks Tom, I was hoping it would be OK. I told the engine builders my specific uses for this engine and car, I wouldn't think they'd put in that crank if it would be a problem. Let's hope it's not...
