: 6 cylinder fuel pump question

I had this on another post and we are getting two rules of thought on my 1966 195cid 1 bbl 6 bangers fuel pumkp configuration.

I cannot get the motor to prime (rebuilt carb and new fuel pump, filter and new fuel lines running into a fresh jug of gas as tank fuel is beyond bad).

Enough details though............. does the fuel pump run off a pushrod that has to be lifted up out of the way as the fuel pump is being mounted or does it run directly off the cam on the 66 195's?

My son and I primed and primed the carb, pulled the pump off a couple times and remounted but we made no attempts to mount it any way other than bolting it straight on.

Can anyone solve the problem (other than the "lose NUT behind the wheel"ha ha).

Thanks guys, trying to get this ole girl fired back up and on the road for my son and Dad needs to come through for him:thumbsup:

Thanks in advance for any help

The fuel pump has no rod and runs directly of off the cam.

Oh oooooooooooo so any chance that lobe it runs off of could be worn out with only 82,000 original miles and only an elderly lady driving it?

Sure hope not.................

It's always possible the cam/fuel pump lobe could be worn, but not probable. Are we sure you have the correct fuel pump to fit a 194/230/250 GM 6 cylinder and that this pump diaphragm is still working? It sounds like that could be an area to check first before wading into replacing a camshaft. Its usually the simple things. Go grab another pump and try it again from NAPA or better yet visually compare your pump with their pump before you buy it to compare the pump arms and make sure they are similar. I'm betting you have the wrong or defective fuel pump. If you get really determined you could try a less expensive electric pump in the gap and make a block off plate from the gasket or buy a V8 plate.

Depress the arm and put your finger over the inlet.
Should hold vacuum for a short time if the diaphragm's OK.
