Review of Pypes 3" system. I recently purchased pypes 3"system for my 70 SS and it's new 489" motor. I ordered it on Saturday and it arrived on Tuesday! I ordered the kit without mufflers and opted for a set of Dynomax UltraFlows offset/offset from Jegs. This morning (sat) I started to install it and the first thing i realized is that with an X-pipe, you have to assemble the system in a certain order, and work the pipes onto the headers. The reason for this is because depending on how far you shove the pipes into the "X", the width between the pipes varies. Also, you have to keep the "X" centered. Shoving one side in farther than the other will put the whole thing out of whack and cause problems. On a 70, you will not need the optional pipe to space between the headers and the front of the X pipe, at least with hooker 2455's. In fact, I had to shave a bit off the back end to get the mufflers on. The one piece tail pipes are a snap to install and fit well. I ended up cutting off about 6" from the end of the tail pipes for my chrome exhaust tips.
After getting everything centered, rotated, and in place, I welded all the X-pipe connections, and used clamps on the mufflers. Pypes was right, after starting it, tons of white smoke came out from the burning mandrel fluid they use. This is the first X-pipe system I have owned and it definitley has a sound of it's own! With these mufflers, when you hit the throttle it makes a kind of RRRRIIPP sound or a WAAP sound. (nice sound effects huh?) OVerall it is a great system and it took me about 5 hours to install it. However as most of you know exhaust work is never pleasant. I still need to weld the tips on and may loosen the clamps and pull the pipes around to get them a little more centered. Overall, highly recommended. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
