The 15X10 rim is going to be tight, you might have to do some minor trimming around your wheel well outer lip. Most guys running the 15X10 combo's are running a 5 1/2 backspacing. That extra 1/2" will be close. A 295/50-15 is the widest 27" tall tire you can get.

does anyone know if a 28.0/12.50-15 M/T will fit on a 15x10 5.5 backspacing under a stock 72 chevelle suspension?

Just be aware of the differences in sizes. A "true" drag slick is measured by tread width. Street slicks like the E.T. Street are measured at sidewall width.

when it comes to tires, my experiences all say the Mickey Thompson ET street is the ebst for traction, and Grand Am Super Wides are terrible for traction, my small block can roast my pair of super wides

I can also vouch that the MT ET Streets do bite the asphalt!
