: Vizards 406 combo
Has anyone used the street 406 combo in the "Max Performance Small Block On A Budget" book by Vizard? The solid lifter 12-502-5 comp cams chosen seems a little radical for a street car.I am currently considering this combo and any input would be appreciated. graemlins/beers.gif
Cammin1 Sep 5th, 04, 4:51 PM What were the specs on that one? Was that the 12 to 1 motor?
Vizard combo=stock crank,6 inch olds deisel rod,10-1 KB silvolites,comp cams 12-502-5 solid,530 540 lift 106 cl dur@.05 =250- 254 Its actually listed as a circle track grind,maybe the cubes tame it down some.And fully ported 041s.
pdq67 Sep 5th, 04, 10:53 PM He, He!!
Don't think a 406 is gonna tame that stick down much, imho...
And I figure she needs at least 11 to 1 CR. to run like it should!!

That cam has an advertised duration of 280. So it's a pretty aggresive ramp on the lobe, and probably not something you would want to deal with on the street, or try to break in without failure....
jm67 Sep 6th, 04, 10:37 AM OK Thats kinda what I suspected.I plan to use a scat rotating assembly with their 9000 series crank, some 10-1 kb's,and some 200cc iron eagles.Used mainly for spirited weekend driving and drag racing.Something that will run power brakes.Cant budget a roller.Any suggestions, solid or hydraulic?
bowtie455 Sep 6th, 04, 1:52 PM i prefer a flat-tappet tight-lash oval track solid cam. i call it the "poor mans roller".i like what i've read about the ability to rev quicker and higher with the lighter solid lifters/titanium retainers.i don't have my combo assembled yet so i can't give you real-world experience. :(
clean7t Sep 7th, 04, 4:23 PM That cam is a little smaller than what i have in my 406 and it is extremely nice on the street. mine is a 252 with .552 lift with the 1.6 rockers. 106 cl and i am running 10.63:1 compression
After searching through the many 406 cam choice posts..........Vizards choice is very similar to the 280/284F10 Lunati grind UDHarold has recomended numerous times.Correct me if I'm wrong.
BigRed-L72 Sep 7th, 04, 7:55 PM Hyd F/T will do all you need it to, for a dual purpose, all around set up IMO.
UD 288/296
UD 296/304
If you have the compression and a 2400-3000 conv, assuming you`re using an auto of course, either will do
TNTRacing2 Sep 8th, 04, 8:24 PM what was the performance numbers of the vizards motor. I am about to build a 406 with 041 heads. Need as much power as possible. What type of porting was done to the heads?
pdq67 Sep 8th, 04, 8:39 PM Sorry guy's, I was figuring it as at least a 290 advertised duration cam..
AND yes, it is aggressive..

509 ft pounds torque,496hp
.041s , 30 degree intakes,angle milled to 58cc full porting 178cc vol.255cfm@600lift
baddbob71 Sep 9th, 04, 9:11 AM Vizard has done alot with 30 degree intake valve angles, does the book spec out seat widths and top and bottom cut angles? 2.02 valve? I bet he recomends quite a bit of unshrouding for the flow of a 30 degree seat.
Darracq Sep 9th, 04, 12:53 PM I dont think you will get the 041 to flow as good as he does, you would be way ahead to just buy some aftermarket heads. cast, or alum
He doesn't get to detailed on the work he did on these 041s but does have a chapter devoted to cylinder heads. He also has a book he wrote on cylinder heads that i have heard many people recomend.
