Looking for a better pad for street driving. I have a 67 chevelle that stops well at the track. Has been 139 in the 1/4 mile and stops fine. After a some stop and go driving on the street, stopping distance increases and it just doesn't have the same feel. Brakes system consists of 1972 monte carlo disc brakes up front with 13 year old pep boy pads, and drums out back with aluminum drums and primary shoes front and rear. Manual master cyl. I'm leaning towards the front as being the problem.
Was going to order either Hawk or Performance friction next time I order from Jegs unless someone has tried something that works better.

Performance Friction makes pretty good pads, but their "Z-rated" pad IMHO is a little too aggressive for regular street use. I've got them on my car and it stops like crap when the brakes are cold, but after 3 or 4 consecutive 80-0 stops, they really have some serious stopping power.

I use Hawk street/strip on my 66 Corvette and my NSX. Low brake dust, no noise and no brake fade. I will put them on the Chevelle when it is closer to completion. If you go with the Hawk pads, there is a break in procedure which should be followed. It is a series of stops from 50 mph to 0 done 10 times and a cool down period of about an hour. Once the pads are set, you are good to go. Jerry

Hawk HPS work very well for the street and will take a reasonable amount of abuse, too. Great initial bite, easy to modulate, and they don't really fade much when overheated but do wear very quickly when you run 'em too hot.
Not noisy, easy on rotors, and pretty light on the dust. I really like the HPS compound for street cars that see occasional heavy brake use.

Thank you for the feedback guys. I went to the track the other night, after 6 passes there was a noticable difference in braking, not to a point that it was dangerous, but it gives me a baseline. Leaning towards cutting the rotors and going with the Hawks, gonna give them a call and see what they have to say. Thanks again, if anyone else has some input i'm listening.
