: Windows XP boot disk
Cameano Aug 14th, 08, 6:21 PM I've got issues on my home desktop. I went to reboot it this morning, and it won't reboot, even in safe mode. I did some searching, and see that I can download the files to create a boot disk. I can download them to my son's laptop, burn them to a dvd, and try to boot from the dvd drive. Unfortunately, my cd drive is stuck, so unless I can pry the door open, I won't be using it.
Has anyone had to deal with this before? Anything I should look for before proceeding? I'm running XP home edition, nothing fancy. Only thing I can think of is I did go through and clean out some unused programs the other day, one of them must've deleted a file somewhere that is needed. :(
Mike Aug 14th, 08, 6:27 PM Have you got the original Win XP install disk ?
Boot from that -might need to reset the BIOS to let it boot from CD -and run a repair install.

Sounds as though you've acquired some malware "stuff".

Thanks for the reply, Mike. No, I don't have an original disk, the computer came with it pre-loaded on the hard drive, no disk. It was running good up 'til yesterday morning. I couldn't log on to the internet, like it does once every 2-3 weeks, so I just went to reboot, which usually solves the issue, and nothing. If you try to boot in safe mode, it always gets stuck in the same spot, trying to load the same file. I haven't had a chance to get on my son's computer, but I will tonight. I did look at that first link and read most of it. I'm going to have it right there to guide me through it tonight. Thanks again!
Mike Aug 15th, 08, 2:25 PM See if it'll boot into "last known good configuration"

Go here and download (on your son's Computer) this and burn on CD. Start your computer and reset the BIOS for Cd-ROM boot (look it up on the net if you don't know how), boot up and you can then move all your Docs to another partition, floppy,or USB drive. Then you can do a restore .
You are not going to get it up as you obviously don't have the Tech sauvy to fix it with Recovery Console like someone suggested. More than likely your Computer has a hidden partition to do a restore, look in your Manual and see.
Good Luck!

I tried downloading that program through FTP (too slow, like 16 HOURS d/l time), then downloaded and installed BitTorrent, but couldn't get it to download with that either. So I finally have some time to go through the Recovery Console to fix it per the first like Mike posted. Since I don't have a boot disk, I followed the link on the page to another site, which tells you how to do it manually, moving the required files to a .tmp folder, deleting the originals, and moving the copies back to the original folder. Supposedly this will only copy the original files, and leave behind any malicious files, which get deleted when you remove the folders. But I'm stuck again, as I can't copy some of the files to the .tmp folder. I can see them, but I can't copy them. They are there, I've found them in the directory. I can rename them as suggested in the one link, but I still can't copy them after renaming them. I guess I'm stuck on this one. Maybe the wife will get her wish of a new computer now. I won't know what to do with myself with more power, this one only has 756k ddr ram. I see I can get 6gb ddr now. I'm going to mess with it some more tomorrow, but for now, it's not looking good at all.
