I lost the ignition key for my car, it's a '67. how hard would it be to replace?

i lost my '68 keys a couple months ago, ignition and trunk. i called a locksmith and they made me keys for $140 including the trip. if you just need the ignition it should be less. my door key was the same as my ignition, so they pulled the door lock cylinder out and made keys from that.

Remove the Door Lock. There is a code stamped on it. Bring the cylinder and code to a Locksmith. It will cost about $20.00 for the key cut according to the code stamped on the door lock.

It cost me $50 to have an ignition key made for the Charger and the locksmith came to where I work to do it.

I'll go to the shop, there are a few local. I was going to but a new switch or cylinder, whatever it's considered to be.

door lock isn't same as ignition. i have several different ignition keys from the 60s and they all will start my 66. there were only a few different cuts used then and with wear most will work.

Great, now what? I'll buy one of your ignition keys.

That's one bad/good thing about the older-before 69 GM ignitions that comes in real handy from time to time.

Find someone with a key collection and there will be several keys in it that (with a little jiggle) will turn the lock.
Then you'll be able to remove the cylinder and take it to a locksmith to have a proper key made. (much cheaper than having the locksmith come and do it.)

My neighbor found a key in my key collection that worked in his 65/66 Impalla and did just that.
The funny thing was, the key that worked didn't look anything like a GM key.

you mean in order to remove the cylinder the lock has to turn?

Yes, counter clockwise with a paper clip in the little hole.

Just another thought:
Hot wire the car and drive it to a local locksmith shop.

I'm going to buy a new key and cylinder. I just stopped at the locksmith and if I bring the cylinder in he'll make a new key for 50 bucks, I can get a new one for half that. And I know as soon as I do I'll find the other one.

Problem is, you can't get the old one out without a key.

In 1967 the Door Key and Ignition Key are the same. For the second key, the Trunk Key and Glove Box Key are the same.
