: first trip to the strip w/my '66 need tuning advice

I took my recently completed '66 to the strip for it's first test and tune Friday night. It was great fun, but I need to do some tuning on launch and top end. The track was being a little stingy with the traction compound, and I got a late start after the other drivers said that the track conditons were not as favorable as they had been earlier. My best run was as follows:
60' 2.23
1/4 13.491
speed 104.59

This was on BFG T/As (28 PSI), 396 .60 over, 820 heads w/2.19-1.88 valves, 1 3/4" Hedmans, TH-400 w/2500 stall, Edelbrock 750 performer carb and Air-Gap intake, 3.73 rear gears.

The car pulled strong to 6000 in first, but stumbled at around 5600 or 5700 in second gear at which time I shifted to third. I did so initially because I thought the valves may be beginning to float, but they gave no indication of doing so in first gear on any of the 4 runs, but did so every time in second gear near the top of the track. Is this a lean A/F problem on the top end? I've ordered rods and jets to richen the carb 2 stages. Do you guys think this will help? Thanks.

You have a 12.8X or better in there with that mph.
Not bad graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Get rid of the T/A's and get some sticky tires in there. You'll need a high 1.7 to low 1.8 60 ft. to get into the 12's,and you won't get that with radial T/A's
What fuel pump do you have?
What cam?
How did the reeat of the timeslip look?
Can you post all the data? (1/8 mile, etc.)

It could be a fuel delivery problem, the fuel pump/system isn't keeping up with demand. Check for any kinks in the fuel lines. The sock in the tank could be plugged. Sometimes a very small pinhole in a fuel line will let air in but be too small for fuel to leak out. Your MPH is definitly good for 12's smile.gif .

The entire fuel system is new. 16 gal. foam- filled fuel cell w/sump, steel braided lines from tank to carb, Fram canister race filter, and 140 GPH Summit electric pump with regulator. The cam is a Comp XE274. The time slip info is as follows:

R/T .652
60' 2.224
330 5.842
1/8 8.788
MPH 83.65
1000 11.336
1/4 13.491
MPH 104.59

Any suggestions on streetable tires that will help 60' times? Thanks for the input. Keep it coming.

John, since you hace 3.73's,a 275/60 drag radial would be perfect IMHO and experience.Mickey Thompson now makes them or you can get the BFG's
I cut a 1.83 60 ft. using BFG drag radials with 2.73 gears.
