: Not painting the chevelle the orignal color, go custom/ year correct

Hey guys,

Well another thread started by me in reguards to paint color.
Cliff notes- My chevelle was paint Mist Green(code 45, light green) originally, I agree it would look good in this color but I want it to look sharp. If I was doing an age appropiate restoration this would be a great color.

Well if all goes as planned I should be painting my car in Janurary and I have narrowed it down to a few color options.
In your opnion would you stay with factory colors or be open to nice modern colors?
It is really a difficult decision as i will be using 17" wheels and you want the wheels to flow with the theme/color.

Colors.
1. 2004 Corvette Lemans (Dark)blue with silver/grey SS stripes

Wheels? Do I try to do Z06 wheels? or maybe TTDs with spokes that match the stripes

2. 1970 Astro Blue with white, black, silver/grey SS stripes

3. Cortez silver with black SS stripes.

I guess I am leaning toward the Corvette dark lemans blue. However it is a higher maintance color when compared to silver.

silver with black stripes always looks good, but it is a bit overdone these days.
how about a darker shade of green?

I have considered it, they usually look good but I don't think they give the "thats sharp!!" factor. To back up this statement look how many cars are available in dark green these days. There are still some but very few when compared to 15+ years ago.

If you are going to paint it a factory color, you should keep the stripes correct also. Personally I like the factory colors.

The corvette blue is very dark and will be more work to do it and maintain it.

factory colors are usually the best choice, especially if there's a possible re-sale in the future. You limit your market greatly with non correct paint colors, even if it's a nice color.
Even if you plan to keep it, modern colors are sometimes a fad color. It may look good at first, but you may tire of it in a year or so. When seeing classic Chevelles, our mind's eye has been trained to see certain cars in certain colors, factory colors. With an odd color not used in that particular year, it may look out of place, especially if you go to car shows with other Chevelles.
Custom colors can look absolutely stunning on a show quality cutom built car, but those are most likely cars that were built with the sole intention of standing out in a big way and built with cubic dollars.

My stripes are crooked, the color isn't quite a match to a factory color far as I can tell, lotsa dings and flaws in the paint which I guess to be 15 years old, a few small rust puckers.....but wifey and my son are AMAZED just how many WOW and GEE WHIZ and NICE CARE I get....can't leave the house without some positive feedback.....

Astro blue with black stripes looks amazing. Subtle yet VERY cool. You may find more Camaros out there with this combo - search the web.

I think blues and greens will be taking over as the reds and blacks get a little bit "overdone" as they are so popular.

Thanks for your input, It's what I needed to hear from someone other than my dad. Althought I would love full custom chevelle(paint, LS motor, interior etc) I don't have the funds this time arround.

It looks like I have to decide between astro/69 camaro lemans blue and cortez silver.

With astro blue or lemans blue, Could I get away with Torque Thrust Ds? other wheel ideas? C5 Z06 wheels?

I like the idea of the dark Corvette blue with silver stripes. I didn't want my car to look just like one that someone else had. There are tons of marina blue Chevelles out there. I built my car for me, not to impress others. My car is somewhat close to an original color, so it doesn't look wrong. Don't be afraid to stand out a little.

Thats the way I am leaning... I also have a 70 that was originally Mist Green, but its NOT a resto... I am actually leaning more toward a light green, maybe a little brighter than the Mist Green, and maybe some pearl for some added "kick"... Part of my "lean" is due to the Green interior. I plan of changing it, but that might be a few years down the road...

As for the Astro Blue, I was thinking about this bright Blue color (Electric Blue) I have seen on the newer Mini Coopers... A little brighter than Astro.

I am planning on a factory "White" interior, so IF I do stripes, they'll be white (but right now, I don't want stripes)...

I was at Hot August Nights this past weekend, and saw very few blue and green Chevelles (overall, greens and Blues weren't common). Lots of red/orange/yellow/silver...

Are you kidding me???? I get four post in a row to paint is light green!!!!! I wish I could love the color but I only like doing things once. Sure a mist green chevelle will look good but when I have to sell it it is easier to sell a silver or a blue one i would think

today I am leaning toward silver

My Elky in post #7....originally a 45 Mist Green car...

I bought the car a few years ago 1/2 cloned

I'm sure you agree the blue and black combo with black buckets is more attractive than solid 45 with a saddle bench interior and column shift 3-spd...probably a 350 4v in there. Come re-paint time....Thinking the OE Mist Green with correctly-painted SS Stripe with the new black vinyl top would be stunning. Or maybe the cowl hood with no stripe......

I am having the same dilema (sp?) about colors on my 66 Elky.
Absolutely no way it is going RED again.

But, I do have it narrowed down to a few GM blue colors
Marina Blue may be too light a color for my taste
Is Mist Blue a little brighter and a darker blue??
Saw a 69 Vette blue that looked good---not too dark or light---and it was a bright color.

Will be doing a 2-tone blue interior on this car too.

What would happen to the value of the car if the color is changed to something other than the mist green? We have the same dilema, a 70 chevelle malibu all original, mist green and would like to change the color but do not want to hurt the originality of the car.

I painted my 69 speedway blue, which is a factory toyota color.
It kinda looks like the factory lemans blue but has a lot more pop to it, which makes look diifrent than every other lemans blue 69 chevelle.
IMHO all wheels that arent chrome or billet are ugly. And I hat SS stripes, every car has them even the import guys, trucks, mustangs. If I did them I would make them very subtle, like royal blue car with dark blue stripes.
Just me opinion, but you know what they say they are like *******s

Wouldnt worry about what some unknown buyer would want. THey could like the non correct color you paint it just as someone else may like the original.
Personally I dont think anyone cares, paint it whatever floats your boat.
As far as dark blue in 89 some Vettes had a gorgeous dark blue color on them.
Something to think about.

Could never make my mind up either, most the popular colors, you see a couple at every show. Went with an 06 Vette white. Plain but clean and you dont have to wax and dust it all the time..
