You could have an 8:1 DCR motor ping like crazy if the quench was messed up, but you could have a similar 8.25:1 DCR motor not ping at all with proper quench. Shoot for .039" to .045". I had the deck hieght of my 400 sb block milled down to achieve an .035 quench with a compostion gasket. Steel shim gaskets are not available for the sb 400. With a compostion gasket the quench would have been .065. The initial cost was worth every penny, I can now use an off the shelf Fel Pro gasket if I ever have to pull the heads. | ||
