I Have a 396 big block that I'm going to get rebuilt for my weekend driver chevelle, but i haven't figure out what cam to use yet. The motor is going to be mainly a mild built reaching over 400hp. I do have a list that i might want to use.

Cam Choices:
Comp cam XS268S, 282S, 270S.
Lunati 402A1LUN

Would like comments on my choices

Alot of it depends on what the rest of your combo is.Heads, manifold, carb, tranny, and gears, etc.

The Lunati 402A1LUN has the most 'area under the curve' of the 4 cams you named. It should make the most power, and it has proven to be a long-life camshaft, going a year between lashing the valves, and many years on lifters and springs. It was designed to replace, and beat, the old LS6 cam, and it does, throughout the RPM band. It should make a minimum of 425 CONSERVATIVE BHP, about 6400. It needs about 9.5 to 10.5:1 CR, headers, a 2500 SS or 4-speed, and a good high-volume mech fuel pump and 1/2" fuel line.

Harold, how would that 402A1LUN do in a 9.1 CR Street 489 BB with TH400/2400 stall? I just may consider abandoning the hydraulic roller idea for that small solid cam.

UDHarold Harold- Is there a Lunati Small Block cam that is the equivalent of the XS268 (solid cam- 230/236@.050 with .488/.501 Lift) that will perform better?

Charles,

The 402A1LUN will work just fine as it is, and if you want a smoother idle and better power in the 1500-3000 range, order the cam with a 112 LSA.

AllGoNoShow,

Wait about 6 weeks......
