I'm undecided on which head to put on the 383. I have a choice between a 64cc 2.02/1.6 or a 76cc with 1.94 ect. Im told the 76cc head will put me at 9.5 comp and 420 hp. The 64cc will be around 10.5 at around 450 hp.
aluminum or iron heads? what brand? what runner size? what's the rest of the combo, such as cam, convertor, gears, intake, carb, etc.

Are you saying that with the specs advertised the HP is not possible. I'm curious, because I've looked at several 383's and have been told different HP ranges from 330 to 450. What should I asked for for proof, so I dont come across as a sucker.

Thats a mild combo with stock heads..1HP per cubic inch is pretty lofty...its the best GM could do fo many years..at 420 your looking at 1.10hp per cubic inch. Now with a set of vortec heads or nice aftermarket heads 420HP would be is more easily obtainable

That was my next question. Stick with the short block and pick up some vortec or good darts down the road. The short block will run me $1700 and they offer a decent warranty
