: Got My Heads Back...
kjett Jan 6th, 05, 1:10 PM Well, they finally arrived after being gone for 5 weeks. Looks like Champion did a really nice jobe. Full port job on heads and intake, port floors raised on the intake runners, push rod passages clearanced in the heads, chambers polished, etc...
Here are a few pics for anyone interested:

RatONaStick Jan 6th, 05, 2:24 PM very nice, what kind of cash did that set you back?
DOUG G Jan 6th, 05, 2:38 PM Very nice work.
Nice!,.... and you can get away with having them on the living room carpet? :D
Georgia69 Jan 6th, 05, 2:43 PM I don't think my car has ANY parts clean enough to even come in the house, much less set down on the carpet smile.gif

My price was for heads AND intake. The price would be different for someone else. I've worked with Tom at Champion before, so we worked out a little deal. May have to be his test mule for the upcoming season ;)

10secBu Jan 6th, 05, 4:33 PM Looks real good Ken. Can't wait to hear how the new combination runs for you in 2005.
Is it safe to assume that the small holes in the bottom of the intake ports (deck side of head pics) is to help "lock" the epoxy in place or sort of?
What did they recommend to do for an intake gasket? use a normal rect port, or make a custom one to help seal/close off the raised epoxy section?
What valve springs are you running? what are the installed height, seat & open pressures?
Todd
-SS454- Jan 6th, 05, 4:34 PM u need a new place to host pics. It exceeds the bandwidth way to quickly.

Todd Thanks, Todd. Yes, the two holes in each runner are to help hold the epoxy in place. As far as the gasket, I plan to use a little thinner gasket matererial (maybe from a carb gasket) to use to form a straight line across the port/intake floors. I don't want to put unnecessary pressure on the epoxy, hence the decision to use a thinner gasket. I think I could probablt run it without anything there and be fine, but since I've spent so much attention to detail up to this point why stop now :D The springs are Isky 9705. Install height is 1.975". 235lbs seat and 650 open.

Bellsouth isn't nearly as generous. I can't figure it out. I pay $60 a month for a premium Extreme DSL account. I can have 10 different web account and 10 different email accounts, but I can't just use the aggregate bandwidth allocation for all 10 account for a single account. Go figure

http://georgiadragracing.com/dragstrips/paradisedragstrip/index.html No way I'll be able to make the 22nd. I'll be doing well to get it on the dyno by then, let alone put the car back together. I've had several projects going on the past few months. One of which was smoothing the firewall on my car and moving all the ignition stuff inside. I've got a lot of work to do to get the car drivable again :(
joespanova Jan 6th, 05, 7:23 PM Ken,I also got the exceeded bandwidth alert. graemlins/angry.gif Send them to my e-mail if poss.
RatONaStick Jan 6th, 05, 7:57 PM Ken
considering the amount of time and labor involved that does sound like a deal. too bad that sort of thing is out of my price range, otherwise id be all for it.
any estimates on et gain from the porting alone?
i believe you are making some other changes as well, correct? what ets are you hoping for after the changes? 9s maybe??
so, when you going to go back to a standard trans? you know you want to, its in your blood! ;)

;)
kjett Jan 6th, 05, 10:17 PM Rat,
No idea on the ET gain from the porting alone. There is a rule of thumb that some use that says that each 2.2CFM increase in air flow is worth 1hp. I picked up about 14%-15% across the board from .200-.700. I figure my old engine was making about 630 flywheel hp. I'm also increasing the compression from 10.37:1 to 12.48:1, going with a bigger solid roller and I've also lightended the rotating/reciprocating weight some, too. I'm hoping this engine will make 750hp/650ft lbs. I'll know in a couple weeks when I dyno. It may not make that much, but that's what I'm shooting for smile.gif As for ET... My old setup ran 10.53 in 1,700' air. I think on a good track with sea level air it would have ran a low 10.4x based on the DA ratio I've recorded for my car in my weather station database. I'm hopin the new setup will run low 10s with good traction. I'm not sure my rear suspension is up to the task. I'll just have to wait and see. Either way, I will do as I always do and post the good, bad or the ugly graemlins/thumbsup.gif The 4 speed would be fun, but not at this power level/weight. I'm not sure a DR-4 would take a lot of that kind of abuse.

DragRacer Jan 6th, 05, 11:44 PM Todd,
You are correct.
10secBu Jan 6th, 05, 11:54 PM Hey Ken, not old age as I believe were not far apart in age graemlins/clonk.gif But, the way I posted give you more power graemlins/thumbsup.gif at least potential power anyway ;)
67Super Sport Jan 7th, 05, 9:03 AM Hey Ken, when they raise the port floor is the roof raised as well so the runner volume remains the same? Is the intake port epoxied as well so the ports are matched? Never had any experience with epoxing ports so I was just wondering.

Never had any experience with epoxing ports so I was just wondering. I suppose every application is a little different. In my case the roof was raised slightly (limited by spring pocket location), but the overall runner volume was reduced from 310cc to 300cc. To really raise the roof area much the spring pocket needs to be relocated higher which would also neccessitate a longer valve. The intake manifold was also modified to ensure the port floors were level with the heads.
RatONaStick Jan 7th, 05, 6:30 PM Either way, I will do as I always do and post the good, bad or the ugly ill be looking out for the results, definitely keep us informed. hopefully you wont run into the bad or the ugly, good luck! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Slowpoke70 Jan 7th, 05, 7:09 PM Can anyone explain to me where/what part of the head is the "bowl"? I have a feeling its somewhere near the vavle-head, as every book I've read talks about the "bowl" when talking about valve-jobs, but none actually tell which part is actually the bowl. They just say "blend the bowl....", I guess they assume the reader knows what the bowl is?
My best guess is that it's the area "behind" the valve when looking down into the combustion chamber. i.e. the area around the the valve guides that leads up to the valve seat/valve? (looking down at the heads as they are in the second picture, sans the valves.)
RatONaStick Jan 7th, 05, 7:24 PM Enrique
you got it
Hey Ken, if you email me the pics I'll host'em for you. I have no bandwidth limitations.... graemlins/hurray.gif
Slowpoke70 Jan 7th, 05, 8:59 PM Okay, now that exactly does bowl blend into? The guide, the runner, the seat, all three?
