My friend has a 68 Chevelle with an 8.5:1 350 with 1.94 heads and a Summit cam(214/224 or 224/224) I can't remember which. It has a 3.31 gear, 26" slicks and a th350. He wants to put a little more stall in it but we are not sure which one to go with. I have a TCI Break-a- Way with about 15 passes on it in a box but I saw no difference in it and a stock converter in my car that now has a 10" street fighter and runs great. Has anyone ran a TCI break a way or B&M holeshot 2400 or Tork Master 2400 in place of a stock converter with an improvement in performance? Anyone have another converter in the same price range that would work?

I run a B&M 2400 Holeshot in my car..flashes to 2800 and seems to work well and not be overly loose..IMHO,its not too bad for an off the shelf job. But,I never ran the car with the stock convertor to give any comparison.

The 2400 stall would be great with either cam.
The main problem is the gear of choice. With a 3.31 gear most converter companies are going to tell you to go with a 2400 stall so that the converter is locked up on the freeway.

ATI 12inch Towmaster
Coan 11 or 12inch Street Performance
Transmission Specialties GM Big Shot 12HS

Like you I would rather go with a tight 10inch from any of the companies I mentioned.
ATI Streetmaster though,is currently on sale!
Sale price is not shown on their web site. They abe about $100. cheaper. The tight one should stall at 2700-3000.

With the tight 10inch the companies are going to tell you to go with a 3.70+ gear.

ATI has some nice stuff, but IMO they are too expensive for what you get. As an example, I can get a BTE 10" street/strip 3400-3800 converter with dual anti-ballooning plates-furnace brazed fins-full one year warranty on sprag and stator, etc. for well less than that. They are listed at $359 + shipping in the catalog, and the ATI lists for $422 and is on sale for $379 + shipping. I have sold a few of the BTE's, and a couple that come to mind are in a 427 Camaro, and the other in a SBC Malibu and they both have worked very well. BTE has an equally good 11" converter for 2500-2800 stall speeds depending on the motor, and it is $258 and has the same warranty.

;) Food for thought:

What is your primary cruising speed when off the track? You don’t want one that will be in and out of the stall under normal conditions.
