I read in a separate post here that you had created a 496 by changing cranks. I currently have a 454 to be bored .030 to make a 468. If I can switch out cranks for a reasonable cost to create a 496, I'll definitely do that. This car will be racing 50% of the time. Of course, in braket racing, consistency is the #1 concern but if I can get more HP easily I will.

Thanks for any info

If you don't mind,I can give an experienced opinion.I recently installed a 496 (10:1,iron heads ,solid roller). This replaced a previous 461 that had ate (2) hydraulic cams. All I can say is "WOW", the power is awesome from start to finish and it does it with such ease.
You'll also need a set of 496 pistons to go with that 4.25 crank and some clearancing for the rotating assembly may be required. smile.gif

I just built one a few months back. Clearance is pretty light just around the bottom of oil pan rail. If you've built a 383 or ran aluinum rods the 496 process is similar.

I thought .060 over gave you a 468?

You are correct.454+.030=461 and 454+.060=468

Looks like I would need to bore .060 over to get a 496. .030 would only give me a "490".

Most likely you will not find a "used" 4.25 stroke crank. There are a few different aftermarket suppliers. If budget is an issue look at Scats or Eagle. A few from TC have gone with the Callies Dragonslayer with good luck. For a mild 496(if there is such as thing as a mild 496 :D ) The Scat or Eagle would probably work. BTW I have an Eagle in my blown 540 (if it ever gets out of machineshop jail  )
