Ok I finally got a 98 jeep grand cherokee steering box. I tried craigslist but I got shined by three different people so I went to AutoZone and got a reman box for 135.. I already have the Lee Kit so Im good to go.. After the scary ride and going sideways I think I need alittle more control in the steering.

How much is that Lee kit? Is that all you need to hook your existing PS hoses up to the jeep box?

Hey Dave I drove your car too:yes: It was real nice

Lee Kit was about 90 bucks if I remember right and it comes with two adapters and a rag joint and that is all you need to run your existing PS hoses.

That's right.

The lee kit is the only way to go, I did it the "cheap way", didn't turn out to be cheap, or easy.:noway:

I might be interested. What are the advantages to the jeep box? quicker ratio? I also am sideways A LOT and with the stock box it's hard to recover.

Hey Dave or Brett got any tips on install or removal of old box???

Dave

Take the Chevelle box to Darylls to remove the pitman arm. Other then that, it's really easy, especially with the Lee kit.

Aug 8th, 08, 10:34 AM
I used a pitman arm puller that I rented from my local auto store(tighten, tap with hammer, repeat). My jeep box required a huge breaker bar to get the pitman nut off but an impact would do it much easier. But since yours is already off, no biggy. Take the chevelle one off with it in the car. Other than that it is super easy. Do you know how to bleed the system? Make sure you are installing a power steering arm onto it.

The jeep box is better in that it usually has less slop than a 40 year old 100k mile chevelle box, it has a larger T bar so steering is not so effortless giving you more road feedback, and it has less turns lock to lock. If you have alot of slop in your steering setup I would also check out all hardware. I replaced all the tie rods, centerlink, and idler.

Or get a 1970 model box with the different gearing... : )
My Elky drifted....
Went out, adjusted the slop outa the box, just like adjusting the float level on a Holley.

Be carefull adjusting the box like this, too much pressure on the adjuster bolt can cause the box to bind and stick.

Thanks Brett.. I guess I will go to AutoZone and get the puller,, Yes my car is power steering right now so I have the power arm on it.. Also the box comes with directions on how to bleed the system.. Did you do something different?? How did you do it??

webfoot
Aug 8th, 08, 5:00 PM
I don't know what the directions on my rebuilt box said, but I put the front on jackstands so the wheels were off the ground, fired her up and turned the wheel lock to lock a bunch of times. After that, your PS reservoir will be all foamy. It takes awhile for the bubbles to subside, but you then top it off again. It should be good after that, but check the next few times you run it just to be safe.

Brettd85
Aug 8th, 08, 5:40 PM
Best way to bleed the system is to raise the car on jack stands. With ENGINE OFF turn the wheel lock to lock 10-20 times, filling as needed. Then start the engine and turn lock to lock 10 more times, filling as needed. Just for insurance, put car on ground, engine on, lock to lock a few more times. After this you should be good to go. If you didnt get the air out of the system with the engine off turns, then you are going to get foam and have to wait an hour+ for it to settle. This method is recommended by the Saginaw Guru himself, just forgot his name. :D

Well I got home early from work today so I decided to go ahead and put the new steering box in. First thing I did was go to AutoZone and pick up the pitman arm puller and a quart of power steering fluid. Started by taking off the pitman at the box only with the tool and it came right off no problem.. I left it hooked up to the steering linkage.. Then I took off the rag joint then I had to loosen my front bumper mount that attaches to the frame to get to the top bolt in the steering box.. Then I unhooked the pressure and return lines and pulled them up higher than the pump so fluid wouldnt leak all over.. then I took out the three bolts that hold the box in place.. Then out it came.. I took the rag joint bolt out that holds it on the box to use on the new one. I only had to modify one thing and that one of the two bolts in the rag joint were bigger so I drilled out my steering mount to the correct size.. When the box and rag were centered( I centered it by turning it lock to lock and centering it up) the steering wheel was now off center but I will fix that later.. I took the new box and installed the Lee kit adapters which was way to simple :thumbsup:anyway got it up into place and hooked everything back up no problems at all and then filled the res with fluid and with the wheels in the air turned it lock to lock 20 times.. then refilled res and started the car and while it was running turned it lock to lock 20 times then checked fluid level then put the car on the floor and with it still running turned it lock to lock and had nice smooth noise free operation..

I will try to get out after dinner and take it for a test drive but so far no leaks and I would say this is one of the easiest mods I have done so far:thumbsup:

So it was easy... but did it make a big difference in the steering & road feel? This is the autozone box right?

was there a huge core charge for that box or not?

Thanks for the feedback kev! I'll be doing the swap eventually... into some sort of an a-body ;)

Yes it is the autozone box and so far just in the garage it feels much better. Less turns lock to lock and no slop.. Box was 135 and add a 85 core charge. I will be taking my box back to get my 85 bucks unless I could sell it for more.

WEll looks like I have to do this mod now since it seems like my steering box is dripping fluid...I thought it was the lines but they are both dry so I it looks like its the box thats leaking...

Will this work on the 70 monte carlo as well? or do I have to get a different jeep gearbox?

My ebay jeep box started leaking from the pitman arm after about a year. $5 and about half hour remove and install while in the car and not a drip since. You could do this if you arent quite ready for the jeep box upgrade.

Well depends where it is leaking from, but I'm sure it can be fixed. Is it a seal/gasket on the mating parts or the pitman arm seal? I got my pitman arm seal at the local auto parts store. I think they may have had to order it but it only took a day.

Ok Imma get a pic and try to take a closer look to see if I can determine where its leaking from
