my 66 300 deluxe has a 283 and was running good except for popping through carb. i tore it down and found it to be a combo of flat lifters and flat spotted cam from sitting. anyways the cylinders walls look great. my question is: should i just throw in a new hotter cam, set of 305 heads(redone) aluminum intake(freebie), holley 600(freebie) and run with it? or buy a running 350 engine from a friend for $350 dollars. what would you do?

It depends on what you want from it. While 283s can run well, it is easier to get performance out of a 350, as most of the performance equipment is more sized for a 350. If the 350 is in good shape, thats probably your best bet.

Put it back stock with a good old -929 cam back in it, daily drive and enjoy it, imho...
But if you want to have some fun, then drop a good old -097 Duntov solid cam in it along with no more then a cheap, $25 set of Z- (-142), springs in her and rpm her to the moon!!
She will go as high as you have nerve enough ta hold your foot down!!!

There I go again, typing too fast.
Yes, do a proper overhaul on your little 283 to clean all the crap out of it.
Then use the 305HO, (-601's or -416's), heads and a pair of Fel-pro's #1094, .015" thick shim headgaskets to up your CR. as much as you can. Should be up around 9.5 to maybe 9.75 to 1??
Contact Crane or Summit and tell them you want a Wolverine Blue Racer PN WG 1172K (cam and kit) which is their re-pop of the great little old -097 Duntov solid cam...
Crane owns W/B/R now so you will have to hunt for a place to get it.
Install a set of no more then Z- springs, (-142) on the heads and you are ready to rpm her as high as you want to go..
Add the small carb. and aluminum intake along with a cheap set of small four tube long headers and go..
I'm putting my 283 together the same way except I ordered a "knarly", "CHEAP", little PAW solid cam and lifters. The 264/246 solid cam b/c I'm gonna run the dog-sh-t outta my motor up top is all. Just like I ran my junk 301 with the junk -097 cam in it years ago...
I figure she will go 8,000rpm easy is all whereas the -097 is good ta 7,000/7,500....
BUT I'm not worrying about street manners b/c I have a four speed..I will just buck and chug outta the hole and when she hits 3,000rpm, nail her sorta deal all the way up top until she cuts out, then shift her and go again!!

I am in the same position as p171. But have a 67 327 camel hump heads. I have been told it is 300 H.P. It runs good but needs new gaskets. Due to oil leaks. Any suggestions?

Post back what the letters are that are at the end of the VIN string on the pad that is above the pass. side upper water pump bolt so we can figure out just what you have to start with.
Also the head casting numbers if you can get to them easily by pulling the valve covers will help too.
I ask this b/c they made (6) 327's in '67 and that's not counting the 327's that were also installed in trucks....
