: SPI Epoxy question..
64chevy Aug 5th, 08, 11:19 PM I am going to get my car in epoxy soon. And it will probably stay in epoxy until next spring. The car is kept in a garage. What is the epoxy like when it dries? Is it kind of rough and flat like a primer, and easily scuffed? Or is it more like a sealer, a little tougher and smoother? Just curious, as I have never used or have seen epoxy. But most people here agree that it is the way to go. Thanks in advance for your replies.
ss396boy Aug 6th, 08, 3:50 AM The SPI epoxy is different than other(ppg) epoxies out there. It sands very well for an epoxy. I just got done shooting the first coat on my frame yesterday. I'm sanding that coat down and then plan on shooting another wet coat on top of that. The finish ranges depending on how it's shot, wet coat dries to a nice satin sheen that will dull a bit over time. Here is a pic of my frame in the epoxy.

You should check out the single stage too, this stuff is awesome. This sway bar looks like it's been powdercoated.

Jimmy P Aug 6th, 08, 9:04 AM With a good gun, my experience has been that it lays nice & flat and sands easily as Jason said. Plan to apply two coats with 30 minutes in bewteen.
SPI epoxy is by far the best I've ever used.
64chevy Aug 6th, 08, 2:38 PM thanks for the info guys. Anyone tell me where a good place would be to pick up some SPI here in Pennsylvania. I live very close to Harrisburg. Should I just order it online? Thanks again...
crakarjax Aug 6th, 08, 2:56 PM Spraying 2 coats 30 minutes apart, would the primer keep in the spray gun, or does it need to be cleaned and refilled for the second coat? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I've never sprayed in my life!

You can by it at Baker (good people). No you don't need to clean your gun in between coats. You will really like the SPI epoxy....
LateNight72 Aug 6th, 08, 5:31 PM Email/Call Barry, he can direct you to anyone selling it in your area. Or, if there is no one in your area selling SPI. http://www.bakerpbe.com/ Will sell it to you. Great people, Barry & BakerPBE are.
64chevy Aug 6th, 08, 5:43 PM One more question guys... How does the SPI epoxy cover? Thin, thick? About the same as a standard 2K primer? Just curious. Thanks again!

If you mix 1:1 then it covers pretty well. You will see sand scratches if you paint over filer though. I had to block it again after the 2nd coat. It sprays a little thinner if you add an a bit of reducer. I sometimes apply a splash to let it flow out nice. Sprays really good like that, but with less coverage.
