: Alternator Mounts 454/ SWP
feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 05, 3:39 PM The first 2 are the top & bottom mounts for BBC Short Water Pumps/ Alternator Bracket which are chrome, the second one was listed by itself no top and bottom, its aluminum which is what I want, but not in stock. Anyways, The first 2 should work shouldnt they? And would mount it on the driver side?

RB69SS396Conv Jan 26th, 05, 5:48 PM On the 2nd one, IIRC the thing that sticks "into" the page, goes to a boss on the exh man.... doesn't exist on headers.... the flat part goes to the front of the head, and the 2 that are in line with each other are where the alt pivot bolt goes.... it will not work by itself, because the one on top, has the adjustment bolt slot.
Yes those are the early-model brackets, for dirver's side alt.

go with the long pump, the short water pump setup(65-68) uses a remote reservoir setup for the PS pump. the reason is the fact that the alternator is on the drivers side and the standard reservoir with fill neck/cap will not physically fit under the alternator. even if it did, you would have to remove the alternator to fill it with fluid.
the pump i recommended in your previous post will not work with the swp setup, the reservoir is completely different.
the remote reservoir setup, brackets for the PS pump and the pulleys are hard to find, and when you do find them they are expensive.
i have a 66, take my word for it. you will be much better off with the long setup.
feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 05, 6:52 PM I alread bought, painted and mounted my waterpump, installed all my pulleys, Theres no turning back! So I guess I will need to find a different style PS Setup, as for the alternator brackets, the upper one would work wouldnt it? Just mounts to the waterpump and then the alternator, then a lower bracket of some sort would be needed. Wouldnt a longbolt and spacer into the head work? Or maybe even modify the lower bracket #2 pic above, one if a spacer wouldnt work. Drill new holes or cut/weld tabs on it, not sure how much of a reach we're talking though.
RB69SS396Conv Jan 26th, 05, 6:56 PM What kind of car is this going in? The 71?
So, for a $25 water pump and a little rattle-can action, you're going to fab/hack/buy/whatever the WRONG alt setup onto your car? Why? That's not very common-sensical.
You'd be ALOT better off to just get the right stuff for the car.... which is a long WP and the pass side alt stuff, like the small block you're taking out. All of which you can probably still buy new at the dealer if you want, or find on any of a million 454 trucks in the junkyard.
feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 05, 7:00 PM Its not even close to a $25 waterpump, it's a Stewart. Id SO MUCH rather have a LWP setup at this point but I didnt know, the few extra bucks for fabbing up and part searching these few things would be the same price to buy another new pump and return the pulleys, it works out to the same, time and money. Just isnt worth it at this point.
feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 05, 7:15 PM Yeah screw fabbing stuff up, I think im going to order one of these, they look really nice to, I assume this kit will clear the PS:

feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 05, 8:38 PM Ok, so March 20135 for the Alternator &

It doesnt say if this is BBC or SBC but if it is I know it would work with the alt bracket.
Help =)
RB69SS396Conv Jan 26th, 05, 10:13 PM You should be able to sell a Stewart pretty easy.... shouldn't really be a problem. It is what it is, it's basically good at face value.
feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 05, 11:05 PM Yeah I dont want to though, that means id have to hop on ebay which im already on all day, it doesnt really make a diff. to me, and it looks good like this. Anyone check out these mounts by March? =) not sure if this PS bracket would work or not, they sure don't give alot of fittment details! graemlins/hurray.gif
feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 05, 11:19 PM I have another question, other than the headers not being able to house the lower bracket, was that the only thing, or did the stock mounts clear power steering, or was it available in 65-68? Someone check out those brackets ;)

GRN69CHV Jan 27th, 05, 8:33 AM You are making things a lot harder than they need to be. I just bought a complete correct passenger side alt. bracket set from Ground Up for $49.00 (?? think that was right) for the correct LWP. Looks like it came from the factory in 1969. Alt lined up perfect, belts are tracking dead square in the grooves. They have the same thing available for the power steering pump. Real tough to beat the brackets that belong on the motor in the first place.
feedphillipnow Jan 27th, 05, 2:41 PM Technically headers don't "belong" on the car to be correct either. I wanted LWP, it was a no go though. Doesnt really matter whats correct to me, I know it would have been a heck of alot easier. No one seems to wanna help on this tongue.gif
Hey it's cool, I'll find the brackets!

quikss Jan 27th, 05, 3:26 PM I don't think its a matter of no one wanting to help, all these guys are trying to help. They are just trying to save you from a real headache. If you do get the brackets, your altenator will still be over the top of your power steering and you wont be able to fill it. As near as I can tell you are going to spend at least $250 on brackets to make an $80 water pump work. I'm not here to tell you right or wrong, but that is the reason you're not getting the answers you're looking for. Good luck with your project, sounds like you're getting closer to firing it up graemlins/thumbsup.gif

graemlins/beers.gif You won't find the brackets to make a SWP and a drivers side alternator and a non-remote resevoir pump work. I tried. I custom made a alternator bracket and moved the alternator to the passenger side on my 66 so that I didn't have to have or pay the price for the remote resevoir on the power steering.
feedphillipnow Jan 27th, 05, 4:01 PM I think the remote reservoir sold me, errrr, I'll probably sell it, I'll just work on something else in the mean time. Im still going to be spending some bucks on brackets though I dont want any chrome on this engine, all aluminum, I cant stand chrome
mfsr Jan 27th, 05, 6:01 PM Do you have room for an after market low mount alt. bracket for either side? I liked them because it got the alt out of the way for other general maintenance on the car.
Rob
feedphillipnow Jan 27th, 05, 6:46 PM Ive got tons of run, no heat, no AC, I gutted everything pretty much. Low mount alternator, that sounds cool. You run one?
69bowty Jan 28th, 05, 10:32 AM You might check out www.alangrovecomponents.com (http://www.alangrovecomponents.com) for brackets.
feedphillipnow Jan 28th, 05, 4:04 PM What a cool site, all custom stuff, where were you last week with this link ;) Well I took the great advice of swaping back to a LWP setup. I feel alot better now, though with this new website! Would have been pretty snappy tongue.gif
