: How strong is 3 series Original Diffs?
godsend Oct 17th, 03, 12:12 PM As topic i have a 12 bolt as a rear axle. With 4.88 gears on a 3 series carrier. (thick gear)
Is this carrier strong. I see people upgrading long before getting in to low nines.
I use standard volvo 240 axles with volvo outher bearings and 9" ford brakes.
Will a stock Diff with no prep stand another year abusing it with 1.3x 60ies mayby 200 times? Its een holding up for years to this moment.
I dont want to go Spool. that will shurely kill my axles. ;)
Stikman33 Oct 17th, 03, 12:44 PM Now theres a mix and match combo. I worked at a volvo dealer for 6 months, i have respect for the older ones. I dunno if it will hold up, that is a lot to be expected of a 30+ year old posi unit, has it ever been rebuilt with new clutches/springs?

godsend Oct 17th, 03, 12:49 PM For the past 10 years no.
But it seems to work now. Always get the car straight away. No tire shredding around corners.
smittyocat Oct 17th, 03, 2:15 PM What is the advantage to the Volvo axles I have never heard of this mod for a chevy please elaborate

godsend Oct 17th, 03, 2:43 PM Volvo is from sweden. So we have alot of the, The cars ar 20 year+ at no cost. The axles are really good steel. Like strange etc. So we so a new spline job to them, weld on volvo bearingends. 150 a set for them ready to bolt in. And i dont need c-clips anymore. So its a cheap trick to build a 9.sec capable axle for under 200$ If you have a 12b to start with.
chevywidow Oct 17th, 03, 3:32 PM Last month I destroyed my carrier when both spider gears broke in half. Strange makes a nice diff kit part number 01-088630. Comes with side gears and spiders with shims, cross shaft and shaft bolt. Price was $126 from Strange. I'd highly recommend it before you destroy your ring and pinion. There was no sign of it failing prior to. Oh ya, my friends BB '69 Camaro did the exact same damage this past weekend. It's not a hard job to do if you want to stay with the 12 bolt. Slicks are hard on diffs! Tony A. ;)

Bob West Oct 17th, 03, 7:50 PM I broke my 30 yo carrier two years ago,put in a new eaton posi and its still good to go,the axles looked great,no twisting or abnormal wear at all. My axle tubes are welded to the housing.
godsend Oct 17th, 03, 8:34 PM We take them out of 240, 740 and 940 cars. They should be about the same all of them...
godsend Oct 17th, 03, 8:36 PM If you do so, a reminder. the volvo axles are smaller at the splines area. We cut away that part and make new ones. So the axles are shorter and wont fit a stock chevelle. But it fits the ones with wider tires. Mines are about 125cm wide.
