A longtime project (see this post (http://www.chevelles.com/forum/ultimatebb.php/topic/2/26067.html) ) finally coming around. After many yrs it finally moved under its own power this past weekend. Put 50 miles on it to make sure no issues were going to pop up, took it to a long, straight, deserted country road to see what she was made of. Buttometer says its way fast enough, didn't work any more after that because of a wetness problem. I was really hoping to take it to the dragstrip this yr but just ran out of time. I still have several things to do to make it dragstrip legal ( outdated seat belts and no battery switch in back ect...) The other bummer is summers over, only a few more weeks of good cruising weather.

Heres the specs

One thing I did different on this engine was route the plug wires under the headers, makes it a ton easier when checking the valve train

Car passed its first test on the street, nothing broke, and I passed 2 cops and wasn't pulled over, and yes they seen me.

Plans for the winter are to get dragstrip legal, lose the 8 gal fuel cell and get at least a 16 gal with a gas gauge , redo my fuel lines again :( ( really wish I would have seen the post about braided lines and fuel smell in the garage)
Maybe paint if funds allow.
Any guesses on what it will run?

Pee'd you pants, huh? :D

That car looks very "nostalgic". I like that!

Mother's Aluminum polish on those centerlines - armour-all car wash to keep them fresh.

Great shortblock - different cam and a 2 stage plate will turn up the heat on your program - once your used to the combination.

I like it. I'd buy it.

Did you make up your own wires to do this? What did you use for looms? I really like how uncluttered the engine bay looks. Details would be great! Thanks,
Kirk

I made my own brackets to make sure they stayed off the headers.

That thing is awsome!! I love it! If you paint it, you gotta go with the same colors, that is just way nostalgic... sweet

Nice job! small ports=high speed velocity=tons of torque where you need it on the street cruising around. :D

No mistaking the intent here. My what big tires you have. The belts and the cuttoff switch are a one weekend install item so you could get in one race or so and then you'd know what it's going to run. It's fun when the're finished, isn't it?

Well thought out combo. Whats your suspension however to harness that bad boy?! If your engine is putting out that many horses and you're suspension can handly it I bet you could see mid 10's in the 1/4m!!! graemlins/waving.gif

Harold, right now its more a funds problem than anything, wife thinks I spent way to much $$$ already. I need a helmet also since mine was stolen a few yrs back. They are never really done anyways.

blazerbob, Has a ladder bar suspension, was running 10.70s with a high CR 468.

I understand all about the lack of funds thing. My son's '70 Chevelle is in the chassis shop right now getting the front down bars and halo to make it a ten point cage instead of the current six point bar. It's also going to get a window net. He sure wants to run this shootout race so i'm going to get the extra safety equipment for him. My wife left about 24 years ago. As Roy Clark said "thank god and Greyhound she's gone". Nice enough girl, but spent every dime i could make and lived paycheck to paycheck.

Car looks great and I'm real interested to see what she runs at the track!!

Is that a real 70 SS or is it a clone?

Originally a 396 4 speed car. 2nd owner bought in 1973 just to race ( they were cheap then because of the gas shortages and long gas lines ) last yr it was driven on the street was 1977 ( till a few weeks ago ) and was backhalfed in 1979/80. Original engine and trans are long gone, 12 bolt was removed when it was backhalfed and sold at a later date. I asked the 2nd owner if he had any pics when he owned the car, if he sends them I will post them.

Undee70SS,

Thanks for the history and I'm glad to see it's an original SS. My car is too but I am avoiding doing a backhalf so if for some reason I want to in the future, I can return it to stock, even though it would be alot of work. My car was a mess when we got it but we pieced it together pretty well years ago!!

Be sure you post some numbers during your drag strip outtings!! I'll help you any way I can!!
