Help! I'm confused! I just bought a 71 elco from the 2nd owner. He claims the car is original. The fenders say SS 454. The build sheet says LS3 400 CI. The engine block pad says CLB. Acording to my reasearch, CLB for 71 stands for 396,400, and 402. The block #s match the VIN. So what is it?Thanks, George.
Welcome aboard.
Heres the BBC choices for 71.
CLB 71 402 Impala 210 LS-3 TH-400 4-Brl
CLB 71 402 Impala 300 LS-3 TH-400 4-Brl
CLB 71 402 Chevelle 300 LS-3 TH-400 4-Brl
CLB 71 402 Camaro 300 LS-3 Manual 4-Brl
CLB for smallblock doesn't come close to 71
CLB 73 350 Corvette 250 L-82 4-spd 4-Brl A.I.R.
CLB 74 350 Corvette 250 L-82 4-spd 4-Brl A.I.R.
CLB 77 350 Corvette 180 L-48 4-spd 4-Brl
CLB 88 305 Chevelle 200 L-69 700R 4-Brl Monte Carlo SS
CLB 91 305 Impala 170 L-03 700R TBI
I'd say it's the one I hilited.

Thank you, I would guess there were probably no engine ID badges under the SS on the fenders, or anywhere else for that matter. Thanks for you're valuable time, George.

71 and 72 Super Sports didn't neccessarily have engine ID badges, only 70 and earlier.
Check out the Tag Team forum and get familiar with all the forums. You'll find a ton of folks in each forum who really know their stuff, just like Mike does.

Hello and welcome George.
The only chevelle or el camino that would have engine size on the fenders, for your year, would be the 454.
Your build sheet and engine stampings indicate yours is a 402. Therefore it did not come with engine size markings on the fenders.
It would have been easy for a previous owner to buy a set of 454 emblems and put them on there during the past 37 years.
