: MSD6AL As Anti-theft Device
Jawez May 27th, 04, 11:34 PM I tried looking up this info in the archives and couldn't find anything. Do you think if you removed the rev limiter on the 6AL box that the engine would still start?? I was thinking of doing this if it works, but unfortunately im not at the point of starting my engine yet?? Has anyone else tried this?? It would be pretty sweet to know that if you took the rev limiter with you when you left the car that no-one could steal it. Just thought id mention it, to see if anyone has tried it.

TriplblackL78 May 27th, 04, 11:38 PM i,m pretty sure the ignition still works with the msd rev. control or chip removed you need a better plan smile.gif

djgaleana May 27th, 04, 11:41 PM An easy way to make it an anti-theft device is to run a wire from the pos post on the battery or from your keyed source to a hidden on/off toggle switch, then back to your ignition box. The car will not start until the toggle switch is turned on.

Trust me, I have thought about a lot of ways of anti-theft as I dont want no frickin A$$hole stealin my car after I worked so hard on it. I was thinking 2 kill switches in series, as well as a 1/4 turn ball valve on my fuel line ( I ran 1/2" SS Tubing) under the frame as well as this MSD thing if it works, along with maybe a couple other nifty ideas.
Gokou May 28th, 04, 12:25 AM In the instructions MSD lists what to do to disable it.
If you're using the mag trigger, put a switch in between the points trigger wire (white wire) and ground and the box won't work. If using the points trigger, I believe you pull the violet wire of the mag trigger wire to ground.

Wolfplace May 28th, 04, 12:27 AM The chip has no effect on how the engine runs.
Until you hit it of course :D
gasgzlr May 28th, 04, 12:46 AM Wire the distributor lead through the cigarette lighter. Put the lighter in to complete the circuit so the ignition works, when leaving just remove the lighter plug and toss in the corner of the floor.
broke May 28th, 04, 1:45 AM You gotta keep in mind a "pro" theif isn't going to steal your car by busting in the window and hot-wiring the ignition. A determined car theif will flat bed it.
I've seen it MANY times. I even know a guy who has a Mustang - he caught guys trying to flat bed his car right in the middle of the day in a parking lot TWICE.

Until you hit it of course :D The "chip" is just a resistor. You can make your own, and tailor them to exact RPMS... I used to have a chart that had the ohms/RPM limit correlation, but I can't find it.
Technically, couldnt you make a chip with a 300 or so RPM limit? It's too low to let the engine idle, which basically disables it, right?

ovelle May 28th, 04, 12:36 PM run the white wire to a toggle and ground the other side of the toggle.

- Matt </font>[/QUOTE]Based on that I would assume more resistance is a lower chip. Get yourself a big resistor pop that sucker in their and then try. No luck buy an ultra low resistor. Total cost less than one dollar at radioshack

If you peel off the sticker on the pill you will see the resistor...
7800 = 6.63 K ohms
7600 = 6.37 K ohms
7400 = 6.13 K ohms
7200 = 5.91 K ohms
7000 = 5.67 K ohms
6800 = 5.44 K ohms
6600 = 5.21 K ohms
6400 = 4.98 K ohms
6200 = 4.75 K ohms
6000 = 4.52 K ohms
A 5600 rpm chip is equal to a 4* retard chip
A 4500 rpm chip is equal to a 3* retard chip
A 3700 rpm chip is equal to a 2* retard chip
230 ohms is the change per 200 rpm
so, if 6000rpm=4.52 and you want a 3800 then
6000-3800= 2200/200=11x230=2.53kohms so
4.52k - 2.53k = 2k ohms = 3800rpm (more or less a few rpm)
BTW, this came from another site. A guy tested a range of pills and came up with these numbers. Others have used them and said it works well.
Assuming that an extremely low RPM pill in the limiter will indeed act as a theft deterrant, could use a potentiometer and set it to your rev limit while driving, and down to 100rpm or so when parked.

Jawez May 29th, 04, 11:18 AM Right on graemlins/thumbsup.gif Thanks for that info Matt.
