Engine: L-66 1969 impala engine
The suffix code is JO.
Listings say it's rated at 265 hp.

Two questions....

Would this be a good engine to put in a 68 Chevelle?

What would i need to do to bring up the HP at least to 325???

Thank you very much.

OK Gary,

We are talking the bottom-feeder of all 427swith 2-barrel, small cam?
Yes, put it in the Chevelle
If it runs good now....

Low buck
Moderate Performance cam and springs
Performer intake
A pro-rebuilt Q-Jet
Good exhaust
Would make a nice cruiser engine

Middle bucks
The engine likely has 148 casting number heads featuring 113cc chambers to bring the CR down to 9:1.
Get some 1968 063 or the 67-68 205 casting closed chamber heads with 101cc
This will bump your CR to 10:1.
Combine this with a Performer intake, somewhat bigger cam...look out!
Tell me more about the car, the engine, verify the head casting number.
Tell me about the trans, gearing, use planned and budget.

This is a heavier car likely geared for cruising. Do not go too big on the cam.

Gary ,you happen to know the mileage on this engine?
Reason I ask is that it's the Police version of the 427 and cop cars arn't known for being low mileage.

The engine is currently installed in a Willey's truck and the guy stopped running it back in the 80's he said as he blew out his clutch. He said it came out of a 69 impala which the suffix works out to be.

The engine is a bit stuck but turns by hand about 1/4 turn either direction. But is complete from carb to pan although the carb is a four barrel and not it's original 2.
It will only cost me $400 U.S. but then i have to travel from Toronto to NJ to get it.
I'm just not sure it's worth it.

Any comments welcome!!!!

Thanks guys.
Gary

You aware of any work done to it ?
The engine is a bit stuck but turns by hand about 1/4 turn either direction.
That's a concern.
I'm not sure it's worth the trip either.
Where in NJ ? Might be someone that could take a look for you from CT.
