: carb too big??
Brian71malibu Sep 28th, 04, 5:20 PM would a 830cfm holley DP be too much of a carb for a pretty wild 355 on the street?
Also does anyone run the 292H comp cams magnum hydraulic flat tappet cam in there 355, this cam looks good to me and i was wondering how it sounds, and also what stall they use for this cam.
RedSS454 Sep 28th, 04, 5:46 PM If its that wild, no. I guess it depends on what the definition of wild is. I would say if its a 950 horse high winding 355, than no it its not too big. If its alot milder than that. I have about 450 hp in my BBC 454 and am only running a 750dp, and am thinking about an 800 or 850. I think it all depends on your set up. Got any more details?

Brian71malibu Sep 28th, 04, 5:49 PM I have a 600 edelbrock vaccum secondaries, and my buddy offered me his 850 holley. I dont have the money right now to get a 750.
RedSS454 Sep 28th, 04, 6:00 PM I didn't suggest that you go to the 750, just telling you what I am running. If the 850 is free/cheap, just try the 850. If it runs rich, try jetting it down a bit. Try the 850. The worst it is going to do it not run right, in that case, take it off and put the 600 back on. Also, my freind told me that you can machine off certain parts of the carb, while drilling out the butterflies and that would give you more cfm. Talk to a machine shop and see what they have to say. Maybe you could try that, and it may be cheaper than buying a new carb all together.

Personally ... Yes it is to large.
Pat Kelley Sep 28th, 04, 8:25 PM I had an 850 annular Holley on my bracket car. 296/305, 246/253, .544 (1.6)/.507 (1.5), 108/102.5, 296AH-8 Comp cam. These are Magnum lobes on a 108 LSA. The car ran pretty well with the big carb but seems more responsive with the 750 DP I have now. The mph, ET, and 60' improved slightly. If the carb is cheap, give it a try. The 600 may be too small if you wind the engine. I take mine to 7000 on every pass. What manifold do you have? I run a Victor Jr.
You ask about sound. This cam, not the one you're asking about, has 85º overlap and a quite radical lope. With open headers, it's pretty awesome. I use a 3500 A1 converter that flashes to 3700. It's really too low, I should have a 4500.
67RAT Sep 28th, 04, 9:50 PM a 830 is a little large,if its set up correct it may work, your gonna have to cut it back some,or the rich condition may totally kill performance, tell ya what,a 700 dp worked well on my 427,all fattened up and stuff,I would try it,a holley can be tweeked in alot of ways, heres a few !
jet size
power valves
pump size
pump nozzle size
pump cams
secondairy stop ajustment
air bleeds
pump arm adjustment
idle mixture
one thing it might do is stumble and lag in the botten end,but you might be able to cure this with some tweekin
set the idle mixture screws till the engine idles at its fastest, turning them even from side to side ,if they dont do much,i talk bout that later, then set your curb idle to the rpm you want, then go to the primary nozzle sizes,if you rap the trottle and black smoke(unburned fuel)belches out exaust, go one nozzle size down at a time till it dispurses, then run it through its paces and do a plug check to see which way the main jets must go(up or down)go bout 2 numbers at a time!!!!!
then set up the secondary pump nozzle, look for a smooth trasition into the secondarys on hard accelleration, a bog does not mean the secondary nozzle is to small, may be to big, tweek it to get rid of any bog.
set the secondary butterflys just above the air transfer slots in the secondary throttle bores,(do this looking from bottem of carb, small set screw under throttle plate, set them bout 1 / 16th of an inch obove the bottem of the fuel tranfer slots, this may give you more responce from your idle mixture screws
start with a 6/5 power valve.
to tallor the pump discharge speed and slope change out pump cams the get it to the most crisp trottle responce you can, adjust the pump arm activator bolts till you have just slite, very little play when pump are is fully closed.and all slack is gone when the pump is fully open, with no stess on the arm!!!!
then go back to the mains and tweek them in by running it hard ,soft and cruise speed,ya know driving it like it was meant to be driven, and reading the plugs there after.
heres the deal ,some or most of the adjustments effect others when changed,so ya gotta go back and counter adjust! just tryin to help--holleys work well when set up correct, the 830 should work if adjusted to the motors needs,e- mail me after ya put it on,I can help ya out, dont go thinkin it will just work its best by bolting it on and off ya go!!!!!chances are it wont, but it will with some tweekin ---hope this helps out--67 rat member #199
