This can be a very wide open question, I have used the cheapest HVLP gravity feed guns made, bought at Harbor Freight,$50.00 to the most expensive gus made by SATA.$550.00 The cheaper the gun the less it will perform. I had good luck out of the cheap gun , used it alot on primers and a little on the smaller parts. I would not try and do a complete paint job with the cheaper guns, they do not atomize the air enough for large areas.

When it comes to spraying clears you need a very good gun that will lay down the clear in an even pattern.
You might get by with spraying the base coat paints with the cheaper guns, but not clear.

I might not have answered your question, I can't give you a specific gun to buy, but I will say buy a HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) gun that is a gravity feed. ( you put the paint in the cup, which is on top of the gun),

I just bought a used Sata RP from the paint shop. Sprayed some this weekend, and love it! Check out some shops (mine was $200). I see them on Ebay for <$100 ... but the extra I paid was well worth the help on setting up.

Heres one of the better made spray guns, all the threads for the air and fluid nozzle on these guns are built for years of use.

They will spray anything, I use one yet today, for z-chrome sprayable body filler, the thick stuff and dp epoxy, with this nozzle air 36sd, and fluid nozzle medium 36.

Theres a guy in green Bay Wi. that paints show cars with one of these.

These are siphon type guns and use more paint then hvlp guns, but some of these hvlp $100 and $200 spray guns are pretty cheaply made.

Like a cheaper micrometer versus a good one for accurate readings, its in the threaded part of them, how well they were made from day one.

For all around use and durabilty, heres the unit. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Binks-Model-7-Siphon-Spray-Gun-1-Qt-Cup_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em124QQcatego ryZ43987QQihZ016QQitemZ260268934637QQrdZ1QQsspagen ameZWD4V

I've got a siphon type gun, but it has the remote cup. Does that mean I'm ultra-old-school?

You could probably set and listen to the old schoolers.:D

I've used everything from From Craftsman guns to Cheap Chinese swap meet specials to the Sata-Jet 3000. I think I found a happy medium in the Sharpe Finex 3000. I bought it a year ago for about $125 and they're even cheaper now. It has a light trigger and it's very lightweight which makes gun control much easier and creates far less fatigue on overall jobs.
The Sharpe is every bit as good as a Sata in my book. It sprays a nice big EVEN pattern which makes unifrom application a lot easier than cheap guns with less atomization capabilities.

I've been happy with my Astro Pneumatic Evo guns. I got them on recommendations and the fact I don't have a huge air compressor, these are LVLP. They run about $90, or you can get a set of two with 1.4 and 1.8 mm tips for just under $150. I don't spray a lot, but I really think these guns do an outstanding job even for an amateur like myself.

That gun is only about 1CFM behind the DeVilbiss PLUS, which is 9CFM. Pretty liberal use of "low volume" eh?

Technically I think anything under 10 CFM is considered LVLP, but the Astro's are more stingy with air than they appear from the specs. 6 CFM @ 40 PSI will run them continuously without any problems.

I learned my lesson with those spray guns. Most of them are made in China and the parts interchange between different brands. You can't go by price because they are good at disguising them. I had a more expensive gun mess up on mess while painting a car. Don't laugh but now I just buy the Harbor Fright guns when they go on sale for about $10.00. They last about 3 or 4 times before they start slowing down and then you just toss them. I have painted cars with the $10.00 gun with good results, that's all I use now. I run both primer and paint threw those guns. They make them with either a 1.4 tip or a 1.5 tip.
