I am building a Holley double pumper using a Pro Form main body and float bowls from two other carberators. The bowls have the correct part numbers, but one bowl has a plastic float while the other has a metal float. Can I use them like this or must I change the floats so that they are both the same... both metal or both plastic?
Thanks,
Daniel

I don't think it matters all that much to have a mixed pair, but I personally prefer the metal floats.

i heard the plastic floats are subject to leaking after a few years usage.i can't remember the details, but it seems like they have a seam that will eventually separate and allow the float to fill with gas.

I've had the same thing happen with brass floats. The seam split and the float sunk. Talk about pumping fuel out through the vent! I also see a lot of brass float failures in lawn equipment engines.
It's also happened to me with the white plastic floats. So far, the black plastic floats haven't given me any trouble.

I bought a Holley 80508s last year, and tore it down and discovered one of each type. I thought it was screwed around with, but after inquiring here, it turned out the 4160's came that way so the float cleared the metering plate. I turned it into a 4150, and went with two metal floats, just because I have no idea what's in gasoline these days. I know my sight plugs got gooey real quick.

Thanks for the info, I guess it is ok to mix the floats. I may just switch both floats to the black ones. If those are the best.

They all sink, eventually. How soon or how often depends on how much you need the car.

if we can put men on the moon, why the hell can't research and development create a seamless float? graemlins/angry.gif
