Bought the car in an insurance auction and got shafted it looked like an SS but not sure if it is. Not sure what it has but I will work with the assumption of an original 70 Chevelle.

When I received it. It ran and started a few times but then one day it died it would not start at all. on top of that the Hurst shifter got stuck. Went under the car and removed the shifter cleaned it and put it back. While down there notice the started was very oily and dirty. Looked at the positive cable and it look older than the car. Replaced that and of course first time doing it I cracked the solenoid cap. Well replaced the started. I was told that the purple wire goes to the R and the yellow wire goes to the S. is this true? I also read some ware that the yellow wire goes to the R and the purple goes to the S. on top of that the yellow wire that was attached before was spliced and the wire is actually black.
When I connected it I put the true yellow wire in but the starter would not start. (I know put the other one back didn’t work either) back to the yellow wire when I turned the key to start while I had a tester to it. It lit up other end of the tester plugged to the Neg part of the battery. Well in testing this my helper noticed that the Gen light stopped coming on. Not sure if I disconnected anything I have no idea where it should be plugged either.

My questions are

How should the cables be plugged to the starter?
There are 4 cables coming out of the group of cables. Purple Black Yellow and red. Any idea what they are for?
Gen light not showing. any ideas on how trouble shoot.
Does anyone have a good book or location where I can use as a reference?
I will look at the Natural safety switch see if that is the problem for not starting. But if not any ideas?

Thank you
Nick

Ok i got the Gen light to come back don't know how exactly but touched some wires under the dash and it worked.

still working on the rest.

not 100% sure but do manual cars have a Neutral Safety Switch if so where is it?

Thank you

Safety switch should be on the clutch on manual transmission cars if they have one.

Purple wire goes on the "S" terminal of the solenoid.
Yellow wire goes on the "R" terminal but is only needed IF the original points type distributor is still being used.

I don't know of any red wire on a 70 starter (unless you mean the BIG battery cable), maybe it's a power wire from the positive battery cable that someone added for something.
