: Aftermarket A/C - adds or subtracts to value?
Jimmy P Jul 28th, 08, 1:36 PM Say you have a nice period correct muscle car, not a documented, all numbers car, but a nicely restored or mildly restified muscle car (headers, exhaust, intake, etc.)
How does an full after market heat & A/C affect value?
Or, if you have a 95% correct restored car, does an ADD-ON under-dash A/C system detract from the value?
bowtie6872 Jul 28th, 08, 1:42 PM I don't know..
but I'll ask ya this..
you like sticking to the seats and sweat'n like a pig..
or being cool as a cucumber..
you said no doc's and not a points resto..
so it's a driver not a trailer queen..
answer the said question above and you'll find your answer..
busterwivell Jul 28th, 08, 7:13 PM I agree with TAZ..........I drive my car, and it's been known to get a little hot here from time to time. I've got Vintage Air in my 66 Malibu, and I'm comfortable driving it 400 or 500 miles at a time to a show. I put the ac in before I drove the car anywhere of any distance (at my wife's insistance). She was right. Just do it, don't worry about reducing the value.
Bunz-T Jul 28th, 08, 7:32 PM Jimmy I think the biggest question is.... How many people truly care? One. Jimmy.. You are probably asking the question hunting a solution to driving your car in this Texas heat, but you are using value as one of the qualifiers.
After the fire we talked and in your depression you were considering selling the car. After a little emotional recovery you stated the car will be kept. Why let what someone else thinks or maybe an additional $1000 in value keep you from total enjoyment of "your" car.

I would say in most all cases it would be a desirable addition, especially so in warmer climates.
Or, if you have a 95% correct restored car, does an ADD-ON under-dash A/C system detract from the value?
Depends. If the car was readily available with in-dash factory air (like about 65 or 66 and later), I would say yes it does detract a bit....perhaps not much (or not at all) in warmer climates. If it's 65 or earlier, where add-on under dash units were more commonly seen, I would say it's a wash.

Actually this not only involves me, but a few co-workers too. One has a 69 Camaro, the other a 67 GTO. The GTO is 98% original and the Camaro, a nice driver. We're all watching the feedback here. I'm all for it, the GTO and Camaro owners not so sure, even on a 105 degree day! I'm doing the full insulation and deciding between an under dash unit and/or a full blown system.
I just mostly wondered if a car like the GTO would be a lesser car without all original parts. This is their 1st viewing of this forum. Thanks and keep it coming!

o.k.
but the under dash units can be removered.. and made to look like it was never there..
to some baking on vin seats. isn't a problem.. to others it is..
I rather the windows down..
but wife, doesn't like sitting in a sweat box ..
if the under dash unit is installed ,with an eye, on removing it for selling.. you can make it look like it never happened..

IMO, its really is about what the owner wants... Are they looking to enjoy the car, or looking for the biggest return on their investment in a few years...
If someone is worried about "reducing" the value by making the car more comfortable to actually DRIVE, then they are more of an "investor" than an "enthutiast"... Why don't they just sell the car and take up stamp collecting?
Honestly though, now days I think you can do most of the conversions "bolt-on". Maybe need to pick up another heater core cover to drill some holes there (or fab a cover), but basically, its something that could be removed in the future, should someone want to return to completely stock...
IMO, Unless the car is "original" and un-restored, it would probably add to the value. It would be a nice selling point, especially in a really hot climate. For an "original" car, it might turn off those people looking for "original" and there are very few of those left.
RustBucket68 Jul 29th, 08, 1:41 PM For a nice period correct car I would go with a nice period correct dealer A/C unit. Dunno if those are easy or hard to find, or being re-pro'd anywhere. But it might even add to the value if it's authentic. Just my .02.
Or else hang an old evaporative cooler off the side, confound and confuse your friends and neighbors... :)
