I'm not sure how many passes I'll get, probably won't be much tuning either, I want to see how the new motor reacts with the high 11,low 12 second suspension, if it seems to launch fine,I'll get one or two all out passes to get an idea what its going to do.

I'm back and only got to make one pass, not due to the rollbar but due to a minor transmission leak, and a bad valve cover leak, the guy that built the motor used those high dollar rubber valve cover gaskets with the steel shim inside and they don't seal too good with stamped steel valve covers. I could have tried to goop them up with silicone or just wait and go back to neoprene gaskets or just buy a set of cast aluminum valve covers. Anyways its not the 10.99 I had hoped for but I might be able to tune it to get it...

.581
1.5794--60ft.
4.6029--330ft.
7.1806--1/8th
94.91---mph
9.4417--1000ft.
108.32--mph
11.3497-1/4mile
118.11--mph

It hooked pretty good, went to the right slightly, not sure what to expect and not knowing how many passes I would get, I stayed in it shifting at 5500 1-2 shift, then 6000 2-3 shift,,,It pulled great and felt good, picked up right at 24 mph on the back half. Now the tuning begins, timing is at 16* initial with 20 more all in by 2500,,,might try a little more timing since it hooked pretty good, and my go up on the jets slightly 78/80's now in the 950hp might go 80 square, need to up the shift points a little and see where it goes from there. I'm sure I would have seen better times today as I was one of the first pairs to go down track, so track was cool, and lubricants hadnt warmed up completely, I know there's more in it,,,just get to start working at it. All in all it was a new best for me and the fastest that I've been thru the 1/4 mile. :D

A fine day at that! You got to make a pass and your worst issue was a fluid leak. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Nice going Robert, you guys are lucky. It is snowing here right now, expecting 6" tonight :(

Very good Robert! graemlins/hurray.gif
That's quicker than my 1st 1/4 mile run last year with a new motor.
Now the fun stuff begins.
Nothing but good things (10.xx) ahead for you.
No hassles about a roll bar? ;)

Feb 20th, 05, 8:29 PM
No rollbar hassles yet,,,the track uses the NHRA e.t of 11.49, but they were more concerned about the fluid leak. I never went back to the staging lanes, they might have had something to say had I come back around. They told me to slow it down before at the old e.t. break of 11.79 when I ran two 11.78's :(

Congrats, Robert. Atleast you had all your plug wires connected for the maiden voyage graemlins/sad.gif Definitely some high 10's with some tuning/chassis work. What converter are you running? I seem to recall it's a 10" ATI? If so, an 8" converter and some 4,10's will defnitely have you in the 10s. Good job and have fun with it.

Good times...I sure wouldn't be complaining if I could be rich enough to own a bad ass motor like some of you guys.

Feb 20th, 05, 10:14 PM
Thanks guys, yes Ken, its a 10" ATI, I'm trying to keep it on the street too, which doesnt help my quest for max e.t.'s. I'm sure I would have been in the .20's today, had I been able to make at least a couple more passes,or if Garret would have driven the car :D . I need to get the rollbar in and get back after it.

Well, I think it's a fine first outing and you will continue to get quicker from here on. And as I said about the gear and the converter, you know where to pick up a couple extra tenths if you get too hungry ;)

Congratulations Bob! Nice first outing graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Look on the bright side. You are still .4 quicker than you have gone before. Plenty left in it with some tuning.

Great news there Bob, glad to hear it worked pretty good aside from the minor issues. Sounds like you're knocking on the door of a 10 second pass pretty soon. Did you go to Mokan today or ?

I was real tempted to go watch but deceided to stay home and work on the car.

Good first outing with the new motor, Robert. There is probably some left in the tuning. A guy here in Tulsa has a '70 that's pretty much the same motor and weight. How much gear, cam and exhaust do you currently have?

Bob West
Feb 20th, 05, 11:47 PM
3.73 gears
Comp solid roller 654/661 248/254@.050 286/292 107 lsa
1.75" dynomax coated headers 3" pipes,H pipe,dynomax ultra flow ovals w/dumps

Yeah, it was MoKan today, beautiful weather graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The car from Tulsa with the similar setup as yours has a little more gear and cam. ( 4.10 gear and 268/271 lunati roller cam, and has regular 310 CC Dart Pro 1 heads). My son used a flat tappet ZL-1 grind in his 481" that worked pretty good. You have oval port heads, don't you. Thats still a pretty good first run. The exhaust sounds O.K., may be a little left in the cam area. I thought about coming up to Mo-Kan today but put it off too long. If the jetting is on the lean side you still have a bunch left. How much timing do you have?

Bob West
Feb 21st, 05, 7:36 AM
36* total 16 initial with 20 in by 2500 with good ole oval ports (781's) Harold,,,2.25/1.88's mild porting, ports gasket matched and exhaust ports opened up pretty good, I didnt think my smalltube headers were going to cover them, but they do smile.gif

Thanks again guys, I was checking jets today and found out it was 78's square, so I'm going to go 80 square and see what that does, then bump the timing up 2-4* initial to 38-40 total and see what that does. I'm thinking since the track was cool, not much rubber down yet and the fluids werent quite up to temp I might have went 11 teens yesterday had I not had an oil leak.

Congrats Robert. I'll bet it was a great day !
A few minor tweaks and you'll be running the numbers you're hoping for. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The extra timing usually picks up an automatic and the jetting sounds like it's a little on the lean side. Generally the bigger motors like more jet. As you displacement increases you will probably find a larger tube header with true equal lenght primary tubes will pick up power. Like was mentioned elsewhere here though you have already picked up four tenths. I hope to see all you guys at the first MAKO race on April 16th at Mo-Kan. Good luck on your quest. My son ran a whole season before he finally got a ten.

Thanks Harold, if I don't get it in the next couple weeks, I imagine it will take the cool fall air to get me there. I could take the builder up on the vic jr. swap just to see what it does.
