: What do you guys think about buying a fuel pump off ebay???
Please don't get mad at me for posting here....I just figured that I'd get the best advice here seeing that this forum is for performance....and I'm looking for that by asking this question. Well, I've found a couple of fuel pumps, Holley and edelbrock, on ebay selling between $10 and $40. I would like to know what you guys think. I know the only thing wrong I can see, aside from taking a chance of purchasing a bad/defective part, would be that there is no warrenty. I know that you can pick one up for around $50-$60 AND have a warrenty for a certain amount of time. I haven't placed any bids or anything, but wanted some feedback on what you guys think. Here is a pump that I thought was reasonable: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2480658652&category=33555
Bob West Jun 1st, 04, 7:56 AM That is one reason that I will not buy anything off Ebay...no warranty, too many scam artists,"it worked fine when I took it off my car" granted, there are deals to be had, but I'm not taking any chances.
Mr.McFast Jun 1st, 04, 8:24 AM if u want it BUY it the guy has 116 feedbacks and theyve all been good u can probly trust the guy  smile.gif
427L88 Jun 1st, 04, 8:29 AM mc71454 sells there all the time, so it really depends on the seller.
mc71454 Jun 1st, 04, 10:04 AM LXS, what are you looking for specifically?
Hi Gene.
19Nova72 Jun 1st, 04, 11:21 AM I got a Holley red electric pump shipped to my doorstep for $52. It was re-furbished and has been on my car for a few months now and works flawlessly. It would prolly cost you twice that to get one from Summit or Jegs once you factor in shipping. I made sure to buy from one of the people that was selling like 10 of them at the same time for a "Buy It Now" price, they had literally thousands of positive feedback and it came with a 30 day warranty. Just check out the person's feedback, no matter how good the deal is I personally won't be the first to 5th person to give somone feedback.
Well, I can understand about not trusting things/people off Ebay, I got burned once already....I bought a ralley rim, thinking it was 2 ralleys...bid ended and I ended up paying about $60-$70, sent my money order and never seen the rim or my money again. I email the guy lots of times, but I shoulda figured something was fishy because the guy said he had to have it by a certain date no matter what and that he was moving out of state. So, it was either my fault for sending the payment a little later then planned, although in a timely manner, or he "scammed" me. Anyway, I'm looking to buy a good mechanlical fuel pump, although I do like the electical ones. It's for my 388ci, and right now my 71 Velle serves as my daily driver while my wife drives the Stang to work.
mc71454 Jun 1st, 04, 2:56 PM I have a couple of Good Carter mechanicals in SB form. I offer a warranty to TC people. Let me see exactly what I have and I will get back to you tonight. I am pretty sure I have a Carter SB 172 pump. I have sold many pumps to TC members over the last few years.

mc71454 Jun 1st, 04, 5:56 PM No Problem...
although this pump would work, IMO I wouldn't want to run any extra parts than necessary. Those Holley pumps operate at 7 to 9 psi and require a regulator (just barely). Extra fuel lines, extra engine clutter which is not necessary and exposes your car to more danger if something should go wrong under the hood, like an alternator pulley, water pump or crank pulley or fan bouncing around.
Also keep in mind that you cannot run at any NHRA strip with more than 6" or 8" (I forgot the actual #) of rubber hose in your fuel system. So..Running extra braided line and fittings alone to plumb a regulator is wasteful if not necessary assuming you will run her down the 1320.
I highly recommend running a quality mechanical pump that doesn't need a regulator like the Carters.
Just some of my own opinions..

Just some of my own opinions.. I guess right now I'm kinda stuck in that "what's bigger is gotta be beter" scenario and turned into a lil kid when I seen it. Like I mentioned earlier, I haven't placed a bid on it, but I do know that I'm gonna need braided fuel line. As it is, I'm planning on upgrading my fuel line from the tank on up to the carb, and I was going to ask another question and post it asking if I can run braided line from the tank all the way up to the carb. I don't know if it's safe or not recommended or if it can be done with no problems. I just won a bid on an autometer external fuel pressure gauge and comes with the mounting cup and braided line for about $55 w/shipping. I love the look of a fuel regulator in the engine compartment, but I do know that I don't necessarily need one. From the pumps you have, what do you have/recommend. My car is a street/strip car and currently running 8.80s@79mph on the 1/8th mile...and that's with the stock fuel pump from my 307ci and 5/16th fuel line from the tank on up to the carb. After tunning and rebuilding my carb, along with an upgraded fuel system, I'm looking/hopeing for at least 8.50s if not more along the lines of 8.20s if possible. Thanks a lot Gene!!!
mc71454 Jun 1st, 04, 8:38 PM Yeah, I have 3 of the SB 172's.
This is the description from Summit...
CRT-M60969 Fuel Pump, Competition Series, Mechanical, 172 gph, 7 to 8 1/2 psi, Small Block Chevy/348-409, Each Tomorrow $73.95
I also have 20' of brand new -6 braided line (aeroquip) and probably all the fittings you need too. If you really want a regulator I have them also (Holleys - $12).
Well, let me see how the bid goes...if I win it, and I don't like it, I got a friend who'll take it off my hands. As it was, he told me that if it wasn't for him not having a computer, he'd buy it. He was also telling me that since it comes with a regulator, I can always adjust it to around 7psi of less, if possible, so I don't have it at 9psi for daily driving. Thanks again Gene, and I'll let you know what happens. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
ovelle Jun 2nd, 04, 12:55 PM you dont have to use rubber line,i used steel line 3/8.went from the pump to 7" of rubber line(solid mounts, room for movement)to steel line into regulator on fenderwell out steel line to firewall to canister filter then 4" rubber line to my mighty demon carb with the dual inlet facing the rear, looks good and very operable....
i just finished building my whole motor with parts from ebay saved at least a grand, when you do your search pick the buy it now tab and read feedbacks 98% or better is pretty fool proof
