: Would you open a door on someone else's car?

With all the talk here about open hoods and people that open someone else's hood at a show, I was wondering how people feel about opening a door of someone's car at a show. If I am showing a car I don't want anyone touching it in any way. Now here is where I have a problem. We go to some bigger shows with a car coral where all the cars are for sale in that section. We will come up on a car we are interested in and the windows are rolled up and the owner is not around to ask. I always wonder if opening the door is ok to take a look. Just wonder how you guys feel.

Never open up someone's door that I don't know.
If someone opens up my doors and I don't know them or they don't have my permission they usually go home with broken hands and a swift kick in the nads.

Not only have I seen people open doors at shows but actually have the balls to get in and sit down in the guys car!!! That would be a fight with me! Same thing when I have seen adults set their kid in someones car at a show. There are just some things you DO NOT DO!

If I EVER caught someone I don't know personally opening anything on ANY of my cars, it's grounds for a serious ass kicking.

I would never under any circumstance period, open someones car without their permission. No one has any business even touching a car on display, much open it.

Hows this, I spied a 69 camaro SS sitting in a ladys fenced yard. I left a note on the fence, I figured it wasnt for sale, but figured it couldnt hurt. Made the note funny, to catch her attention. The lady actually called back, said the car wasnt for sale, I told her I understand, and if she needed any parts/contacts for parts or someone to work on it, just call. Then she tells me she's actually came home and found a person sitting in the car, doors open, hood up. And couldnt understand why the car wasnt for sale! Jim

I went to a car show with my Grandfather ONE time...He really loved his Chevys, and it was his first "real" car show, amazingly enough. He had them all- '57 Chevy, '65 Chevelle, '62 Wagon that he put a 396 in, '68 C10, '84 Monte, and a '68 Impala which was the best of the lot..and a few others we'll not talk about :p ..Anyway, when we got to the show, a guy had a real nice fully restored '66 Impala SS Convertible, and before I could point it out to my Grandfather, I could see him making a bee-line for the car, and he popped the driver door right open, and sat right down in the seat as if it was his own! I couldn't believe it..Bottom Line after reading this thread- I'm glad the guy was understanding  ...and I'm not for touching other people's cars either. It was just one of those "wait a second!!" moments, I guess.

Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT even think about touching my car if I'm not around! And to lift the hood, or worse, sit in it? Are you kidding??? You know, we take a car to a show, or sale, and eventually we have to leave it alone for a bit. I leave to go to get a drink, go to the restroom, and I close the hood, roll up the windows thinking people will know to leave it alone. I can't believe how many times I have returned to find the hood up. What is it that gives people the impression that they can take the liberty of crawling all over, in and out, of a car...just because it is there????

I dont know, I'm kinda mixed on this one. Definately at a car show no toucha the carunder any circumstances. However if the car is FOR SALE, and no one is around, and it was unlocked Id say it was "OK" as long as it doesn't say don't touch. If they want to sell a car, and dont stick around, lock the door if you dont want anyone in, after all you brought it there to advertise it. Could you imagine going to a car lot and not being able to get in the car without getting a salesman to come open it for you. This is my opinion and not telling anyone else what they should think.

I never would - it is not my property. If I wanted to see under the hood, I'd ask the owner if he'd open it.

People seem to forget that these days common courtesy and common sense are DEAD, DEAD, DEAD. I don't put anything past anyone any more, sorry to say. :(

Id leave a note on the car with a cell if I wanted in.

I was taught at a young age by my Dad if you lay a finger on another mans car youre going to get your butt kicked. Heck, if I even came near his workbench it was on.

Cars are on display to be looked at and admired, not used as a personal jungle gym.

Strange, whenever someone comes over to the garage and they have something in their hand they have to set it on top of my freshly painted car.
Uh hey dumbazz, theres a reason it stays covered up.

Now Tom. We all know that isn't true. :p

Excuse me, but it is VERY true.
What's the difference in opening the door to someone's car at a show and opening the door to someone's car in the Walmart parking lot? Would you walk up to someone's car in a parking lot and open the door? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I were at a car show, and a VERY, VERY close friend's car was there and someone wanted to have the door opened, or even if I wanted to open the door for whatever reason, I WOULD NOT DO IT until after I got permission from my friend. Period! :noway:

And I DID get into a very hostile confrontation with a person several years ago when he allowed his kid to open the door of the 56 Vette and get in and sit down. No, I didn't hit him, but I was extremely close to doing it. I did tell him that there might just be someone who might rip his kid's arm off and beat him with the bloody end of it, for opening their door and getting inside the car.

I hate it when anyone touches the car at a show, you'll get the odd old guy rubbing the paint for some reason... last sunday at a cruise there was a immigrant family (speaking uke, or polish or something) all over the cars with their kids taking pictures... i was debating whether to tell them its not a good idea to touch the cars... after walking a few more rows i saw the dad this time trying to get his pic with a lifted F150, he was grabbing the grille (plastic!) and stepping on the winch to try to climb the front... the only thing that i think cut them some slack was that they were with kids and didnt speak english... i didnt have my car there, so i left it up to the others whose cars were being 'molested' to take issue... but since i speak ukrainian, i was going to offer some friendly advice...

people shouldnt touch... and kids with bikes! dont get me started!!hahaha!

I would never touch someone car in a show but I view the car corral 'for sale' section differently. They are trying to sell the car, somewhat like a impromptu used car lot.

If it is locked, the owner does not want anyone looking inside without them being present (completely understand) or sale sign says don't touch.

If it is unlock, then I may open the door to peak inside. If I am really interested I may even pop the hood. I am not one to start digging around inside though, just enough look it over and decide if I want to find the owner and get a more detailed look / touch with them present.

What John said: If the car is unlocked in a car corral. Then I would think it would be OK. If they didn't want you in it or opening it. LOCK IT. If your going to sell it like that. Then open the hood for all to see.

I would have no problem with someone entering my car if I had it there for sale. I want to sell it ,they should be able to look it over even if I am not around.

I stopped by this guys shop one day to show a friend of mine that worked there my Chevelle. I've talked to the owner of the shop a few times.......he seemed to have a few screws loose upstairs (if you know what I mean). Well, he came out and decided he was going to sit in it. That didn't bother too much until I saw him push the clutch in and try to start it. I have MSD ignition with a toggle (which was off) so it wouldn't start. I immediately went to the back and killed my battery switch and told him to get the he!! out of my car. I couldn't believe the nerve of this guy!!

Once at a small car show I was about 100 yards away from my car and I looked back and there was a women with 2 small children looking at my car so I stopped and watched them. I was shocked when she opened the drivers door and got in , then she leaned across the seat andopened the passenger door for her kids to crawl in. By the time I got back her husband had caught up to them and was giving her H**l for even touching someone elses car. A small argument then ensued between them and I just sat back and watched. A few minuted later I saw them driving out of the show still arguing.

I once saw a beautifully restored 1966 Caprice 396 2-door hardtop for sale in the car coral at a show. The owner of the car was in deep discussion at the rear of the car with a serious buyer. A heavyset sloppy looking guy comes over and looks the car over, then decided to get in the drivers seat, start the car and rev the piss out of it. The owner of the car looked disturbed but kept his cool probably due the fact that he was talking with a real buyer. I couldn't believe my eyes, and couldn't imagine anybody could be such an inconsiderate A$$.

Because its for sale doesn't mean its ok to touch the car.

The only way I would even consider touching someone's car at a cruise is to maybe put the windows up if it started raining. Other than that I don't touch or make negative comments. Sitting in (without the owner present) is a no no.

As I judge at our show, sometimes the owner isn't present and it is necessary to open the doors to judge, we do a points judging process, If we can't open the door, the interior gets a big 0 for points, is that what you think we should give? I don't. I will not open a hood or trunk, the 0 is what you'll get for those areas.

This fat pig would have gotten dragged out of the car and then pounded, "real buyer" on the hook, or not.:angry:

That is the proverbial line....Getting in the car would have irked me but to start it and rev it, sorry he can press charges later. Hes getting his fat azz wacked.

With all the talk here about open hoods and people that open someone else's hood at a show, I was wondering how people feel about opening a door of someone's car at a show.

Not without you around. Most people's intentions are good, but people are people. Suppose an interested party wants to look under the hood with a big metal belt buckle on and scratches your fender... or somebody wants to sit in your car with a screwdriver in their rear pocket they forgot about? Or kids? Or...

Nope. Not cool. People are people.

EDIT: NO KEYS IN THE CAR UNSUPERVISED... EVER!
----------
The only way I would even consider touching someone's car at a cruise is to maybe put the windows up if it started raining.

Their stupidity. No touchy. Except---

Then I would roll up the windows or put up the top if said friend was busy.

As I judge at our show, sometimes the owner isn't present and it is necessary to open the doors to judge, we do a points judging process, If we can't open the door, the interior gets a big 0 for points, is that what you think we should give? Different story here. If someone enters a judging contest, they should expect that. If they entered inadvertantly, then they're an idiot and deserve a zero.

I leave my windows down but the car locked, that means dont open the door !
And kids with ice cream hands all over my paintjob and windows really PMO  and the parents that say
"it's just a car" can F.O. as well IMO !

Well on the other foot, it IS just a car, and when it comes to sticky messes, it does clean up. I'm more worried about serious damage. Door dings, scratches, whatever. But as the father of a 3 year old, I also do my best to teach him to look, but not touch.

People that peer in to the open windows with rings on tick me off, too. The sad thing is people don't even realize these sorts of things. I've heard the "click" of their peoples' jewelry on my door before, too. People can be really ignorant.

That's good, I wish more parents would at least try, fair enough if it's an innocent mistake.

It's different when ignorant people take their kids to shows like it's a carnival display and let them run loose. I understand where you're coming from too though. Folks do have to look after your young'ns.
