Currently my '69 SS Chevelle has the idiot light dash. I'd like to install the gauge package that Ground up sells so it looks factory. Has anyone done this? Is it worth it? I assume I'd have to replace the dash wiring harness with one that is for gauges as well as the one in the engine compartment. Am I right? I was planning on updating the wiring anyways and want to be sure I get the correct stuff. What would be used for the oil pressure sender? Weren't the oil gauges actually run by actual oil going to them through a small line?

Here's a link to noneck's chevelle site. info on changing over idot lights to gauges. But I think the one from Ground Up needs no rewiring?
Give Ground Up a call for info.

First, the oil pressure gauge is electric........ you will need new senders for the gauges. Here's a write up by "noneck" of Team Chevelle fame that explains it all..........

I've seen the instruction's on how to wire the gauge system in, but I think that is for an original gauge set up. Unfortunaltely I don't have one in my possesion, and from looking at what people want on ebay I probably won't. Was hoping some one here had installed the one from Ground Up, and could give some insight as to anything else that was needed. I wanted to replace most of the wiring and have seen that they offer it for cars with or without gauges, and want to make sure I get everthing I need.

I've never seen an after market 69 repro cluster except in pictures but I would think that they would wire up the same as an original unit, otherwise they should come with instructions.
When you go to your local auto parts store to get new replacement sending units, they will ask you "for gauges or idiot lights?"
Maybe someone that has installed one will chime in.

There are 2 different aftermarket 69 gauges available, and I've had both in mine. The first one I think I got off ebay, and most of the gauge is made from plastic and very, very cheap. The upside is it's made to leverage the existing idiot light harness as I had in my 69. You run a few new wires for the sending unit but the amp gauge works with the existing harness. The amp gauge and oil guage in this one broke in a week, and I had to get a replacement.
Once I dug into my car a bit I noticed the dash harness and forward lamp harnesses were both previously on fire, so I bought new harnesses from M&H for a factory gauge car, and bought the new style gauge that groud-up sells. That new style gauge is very close to factory in appearance, and plugs right into an existing factory gauge car harness.
I hope that helps.
