: BBC intake manifold under the stock hood of a '65
Rich-L79 Jun 4th, 04, 1:19 PM Okay, I've been told that my first choice of intakes, the Weiand Stealth and my second choice, Edelbrock Performer RPM will NOT fit under a stock hood on a '65. Bummer.
Does anyone know if GM Performance Parts intake, part #12363406 will fit under the hood of a '65?
There has to be a performance BBC aluminum intake for oval heads that will fit under a '65 hood!
TIA
Jeff65SS Jun 4th, 04, 7:54 PM Rich, an RPM will fit under a stock hood and I have the pictures to prove it. I'll send them to you. I have an Air Gap RPM, 850 DP, Moroso dropped base air cleaner base, K&N 2-5/16" tall element, single gasket under base and Energy suspension motor mounts. I can just slip my finger between the edge of the Moroso lid and the 14" dia. lip on the bottom of the hood at the front, plenty of room at the back. I plan on also installing a K&N Xstream lid but this will require cutting away the lip on the bottom of the hood that I mentioned before. Cutting away this lip should provide about another 1/2" of clearance. The safest way to go is with the GM Performance parts intake you listed. I know thats the one that Mark502 and Dave Bates are running on their 65's.
BTW did you decide on a camshaft yet? I thought you were thinking about an Lunati/Ultradyne 272/282 solid lifter cam. That what I have in mine, sounded really good until it wiped a lobe this afternoon. I almost physically sick, I have a lot of work into this project and to have this happen is really frustrating.
Anyway let me know if I can help with anything else.
I'm gonna have a couple of beers to drown my sorrows :(
Jeff
Rich-L79 Jun 4th, 04, 10:59 PM Actually, if I'd review my old e-mails I could have answered my own question! The manifold I mentioned above is the exact same one Mark recommended to me last February in an e-mail. I knew it sounded familiar!
I have an Ultradyne (one of the last ones!) 276/284 solid cam. It's still a long ways off but I can't wait to get that bad boy fired up. My heads are being warmed over by an experienced Super Gas & Comp Eliminator racer who really knows his stuff so they should compliment that cam well.
Anyway, it's good to know about the RPM. If I don't go with the GM I'd dearly like to use the Stealth but I believe it is slightly taller than the RPM so it doesn't sound like it would fit at all.

66 Close enough? Yes, that hood is glass, but its also flat. And you'll notice the RPM intake.
BTW for those interested, Typical ET's for that car are 10.70's DEEP.
Jeff65SS Jun 5th, 04, 1:07 AM Edit to last post, camshaft is OK graemlins/hurray.gif
The end of the new Manley push rod gave up and was ground down. I'm not exactly sure what happened yet, but when you pull a valve cover and see a really loose rocker arm and a lot of shiny stuff in the oil thats lying in the drain back area of the heads its really easy to jump to conclusions! I checked the lobe lift and its right on so I think its gonna be OK.
Rich have you talked with anyone whose used the 276/284? I'm curious how much vacuum it typically pulls at idel. That my only concern with the 272/282, right now it only pulls about 6.5 inches at 800 to 900 rpm in gear. When I sit at a stop light for very long the brake pedal get "hard" (power brakes). Just a heads up if your planning on power brakes.
Time for a celebration beer graemlins/beers.gif

No, a '65 hood is lower than a '66 hood.
Jeff,
I know a couple of guys running this cam but I've no idea about idle vacuum. I plan on running manual brakes so it's not really an issue for me.
Motor Martyr Jun 5th, 04, 11:46 AM how much room do you have now with the current set-up?
I have a '64 Malibu with a 1990 Ls-6 crate engine, I have the factory intake that came with the motor I think it's # 3933163 ('68-'69 396-375hp or 427-425hp) this clears the hood with a low 3" factory air cleaner. This may depend on frame mount/motor mount choice. It's been 14 years since I put this motor in my car and I don't remember, but I think I have the original small block frame mounts with big block motor mounts without safty tabs from a '66 396 Chevelle (installed an adjustable tie down chain from drivers head to frame). The air cleaner fits up into the contour of the flat hood with about 1/2" to spare. Dave
