Sorry, I posted this once but I think I can explain the problem with more detail now. OK, when I turn the key to the run position the starter engages and the motor fires up and the starter will not shut off. So its like in the ignition switch there is only off and start, no run position. another way to say it is like I am turning the key all the way to start the car and I am just holding it there and I cannot keep the car running without the starter running. I hope this is understandable. Does anyone know how I can jump the starter out or bypass the starter or have a schematic for it. Its a '66 malibu small block

The solenoid's "S" terminal is getting power from the ignition switch somehow.

Maybe the bypass wire that is supposed to be connected to the "R" terminal on the solenoid is shorting across to the "S" terminal and the + side of the coil is back feeding the "S" terminal.

Has any wiring been removed and put back on the solenoid lately?

For other with this problem, if the solenoid sticks, the starter will keep running. I had this happen on a car when I was in high school back in the Ford administration.
