: mechanical fuel pump ?

I removed the holley blue pump off my car. I have a carter 172 pump that I bought off tom. the problem is that it is right against the front header tube. i also have a carter street pump that was new on my 396 and it gives me about 1" clearance from the tube. it had no problem feeding the 396 up to 6700 rpm and i had no vapor lock trouble. looking for input and the way i see it i have 3 choices,
1. use header wrap on the header tube just about a 3-4" section of the header tube thats against the pump.
2. just run the carter street pump(short body) and see what happens with the 454 installed.
3. I am looking into the repro pump that was installed on the L-88 and and tripower cars in 69. it appears it might have a better fit as it has the short body. with the low performance 396 i still had no problem running in the mid 12's in the heat of the summer and the street pump. thanx mike

Looking at your car's photo in your signature.
Just curious...what style/mfg are your headers?
I use a Carter 172 pump on the 540 in my '70 with 2 1/8" primary Hooker Super Comps and they come nowhere near the fuel pump.

tubular automotive in rockland mass. they make a lot of custom headers. a buddy had them as a kid on a 70 ss and i always loved the way they look. bye-bye ground clearance. mike

There ain't no way that I could run those headers!! Cant be good for aerodynamics with the nose up in the air like that, but might be good for weight transfer. What kind of times are you running?

car was running 12.6 at 107-108 mph with an 11" b&M converter and 4.88 gears in the heat of the summer. i was floating the valves at about the 1,000 foot mark. the car was pretty mismatched but low 12's might have been possible with better air and a little more work. i'm sure i'm loosing some performance because the headers are 2 1/8" primary and there is no way i need that big of a tube. the car only had a 8.5 comp motor also. i like the look of the headers. i'm not a serious drag racer, just a test n tune type. car now has a 454 thats a bit stronger. the front end has been dropped. using racer 1320's spring combo and really like the stance. i had really hoped to run the carter 172. mike

Those headers have to go. I hope the new springs lowered the car substantially, because the car sits very high. It is a nice looking car, but the stance kills it. Get a set of super comps or anything to give you the fuel pump and ground clearance. You don't want to keep heating up your fuel pump like that. I have a question, and it's a no-brainer: Just because you love the look of the headers, is it worth killing the look of your car? Better yet, is hurting the performance of your car worth using those headers?

The 60's gasser look... That stance was all the rage at one point in time.

For some reason, I don't think he was going for the gasser look, but more for the "I don't want to smash my custom headers" look. graemlins/clonk.gif

actually i kind of like the gasser look. but it rode like crap so i changed out both sets of springs. i get a lot of positive comments on the headers and i really like the way they look. i really am starting to like the old school look. i'd actually install an old set of tow tabs if i could find them. plan to install some old aluminum slot or torq thrust wheels down the road also. although the tubes are too big i do want to get the car in the 11's. car has been mid 12's with a nothing motor so i feel 11's is possible. mike

i know i know i should keep my comments to my self but..... what is the main purpose of the high front end most drag cars i see are setting on the ground nearly.......just my own opion but the stance makes that car FUGLY!!! but would look friggin kick @$$ lowerd  graemlins/beers.gif rember thats just my opion

I like the up in the air look, tow bar mounts, fenderwell headers, gasser stance, over tired rear wheelwells, hell even chrome reverse wheels or the old ET slot mags look cool in my book. It's a part of hotrodding history and many chevelles were modded these ways. Remember when the serious street guys had chains hanging for driveshaft loops? It might not be cool in the eyes of most but sure gets my attention. Cool

luckey for me i don't give a crap what others think. bob, best 60' was 1.8 with worn out slicks. being 42 years old maybe i come from a different era. THE NOSE HAS BEEN DROPPED! lol
one of my favorite memories was watchin a 70 chevelle ss with a crate L-88 427, deep pan, 4 spd with 4.88 gears at out favorite street racing site. car sounded sweet with those beautiful solids clackin away. big N-50 firestones. listening to him row the gears powershifting was one of the most beautiful sounds ever. all we cared about was going fast. screw the big $ stereo bs. that money could be used for speed parts. the motor was our stereo. mike

even on my 81 camaro a few years back when it was a daily driver it was turning 115 mph trap speeds on the motor anywhere from mid 11's (slicks and open headers) to 12.20's on street tires and full exhaust......using no more then a holley mech. street strip pump turning 7200 rpms shift points....using 1/2" alum fuel line to the pump and 3/8" to carb.

i like hearing about you guys from yall era and how it all was about going fast and being cool and i think its cool that peeps build there cars how they want um i was looking for the purpose of being up in the air like that..... yall was talking about "THE GASSER" look and I was quite sure it was old school so i figured i could learn something about why it was called the "GASSER" and what made it famous.....
