: Tailgate trim

Working towards the rear of the body re-assembeling things and have to make a decision. The tailgate trim (that would go around the woodgrain) has the 'usual' 20-30% gloss black. Has anyone experimented with painting the center of that trimwork body color? Not sure it would look right, or if it should be left with the black.

Here's where the progress from this month has brought me,, (http://www.small-block-chevy.com/myelky.html) The bright work and major assembly on the front of the car is pretty much done.

So guess what my project for this weekend is!

I don't think I've ever seen one done the same color as the body. With the candy red (?) I'd leave/redo it in black to help the trim stand out against the body color.

Marv, your El looks awesome! Id do it in black . Post a pic with the trim on please. Are you going to leave the center body color, paint it black, use woodgrain or real corinthian leather ? :D

or real corinthian leather

De Plane, De Plane !

A nice eggshell black might give the rear a big block muscle car look. That always got respect back in the days, kind of like the way red 427 Fender Flags would get your attention.

My thoughts exactly. Connect the tailights like the SS Chevells, gives kind of a racy look to it. Marvs might look Ok just with the trim and the body color though. Striking indeed yet kind of old skool. Dig it.

The tailgate panel (inside the trim) will definately stay the Inferno Red. My 67 reference CD says the standard Camino was body color, and the El Camino custom had the wood grain. Even tho this was originally a Custom, I can't bring myself to stick the woodgrain over the paint. Nothing is going to be perfect about this restoration/build anyways. And If I decide I don't like the body color, I can always 'ADD' the woodgrain. It would be a major PITA to reverse it once the woodgrain applique' is on :( So I'll hold off on that.

The more I thought about it,, yeah, the 20% gloss black is what the stripe in the trim 'should' have so that's what it will stay. I put a few thin spots in it when I polished the chrome so just need to mask the outter ribs and shoot it back to black.

You know how you get those ideas, then the more you think about it (and hear others suggestions) you wonder WTF was I thinking!!!

The back WILL be together by days end and I'll have some new pic's on the page.

Thanks

Welp, finished up putting the rear together today. Gave the trim a fresh shot of lo-gloss black after polishing the CRAP out of it. Just leaving the body color in the insert panel looks a little 'different' Not bad, just 'different. What do you think?

That looks classy and sharp, leave it. Amazing how that strip makes such a big difference on the 67s. Its a big tall mass and needs somethign to break itup.

I completely agree. What a great solution. A beautiful car, just as a sixties-era car deserves to be now. You win, man. For sure.

Mine is or was painted (Tangerine Pearl) on Saturday. I saw the gate to the body shop partially open. But they were closed. but I stopped anyway. Peeked in the booth and they were spraying my 67 with sealer and one of the guys there said he was planning on buffing it today. So I'm on my way over in about half hour to have a look.
Anyway to the subject. I don't have the trim on mine so it will be all body color. But I do like the way yours looks.

Why not cut some flat black construction paper & tuck it in.
Stand back 20 ft. & drink a beer.

I filed in the holes years ago. Have the trim but its too expensive to get replated. Its clean but doesnt look right being as everything else is new. Maybe when I find some cherry trim Ill try that. They arent playing over there...In fact I requested my username and account be permanently deleted. ZR1 should be on its way to Canada soon so no need to be there.

Sorry for the hijjack Marv, put this back on topic. :beers:
