: Q's on painting a rollcage.

I got my rollcage painted this weekend, and one thing I found out is it's very difficult to get paint on the tubing on the front and rear braces. They're both too close to the window to get the paint gun in there. Short of removing the glass, can you guys give me some suggestions on how to get paint on there? I'd like to avoid brushing it on, if I could, but that may have to happen. What's worked for you guys?

When my brother and I painted his roll bar,
We just used a chunk of cardboard as a shield, and spray cans.

(The interior was still out, and we rolled down the windows, obviously)
Now that I think of it, he had the rear window out for rust repair too.

Came out surprizingly nice.
I'd imagine, the same could be done with a spray gun.

I used a roll bar wrap from summit. It's really nice looking, stretches and fastens by velcro. Here is a link:

Not 'padding', 'painting'...

Sean,
I just brushed on POR15 gloss black on mine using a cardboard shield as mentioned. Worked well.
Gave me a stiff neck... :D

If you use a paint that levels well, you can brush it on and no one will know the difference. Like a Varathane brand polyurethane. Super tough too.

Krylon Semi-Flat black looks nice and touches up easy.

I've already painted the cage with a PPG acrylic enamel. Thanks for the suggestions.

I called an auto glass place and they're coming out tomorrow to remove the front and rear windows for $58.00. I figured I'll kill two birds with one stone, since I need to have the glass out to do dash resto, and rear package tray and firewall work. Thanks again for the suggestions, guys.

Just use the wrap with NO padding! It looks great. It stretches so it starts out small enough to wrap just the bar. I wish I had pictures of mine but it's in storage.

Why are we talking about roll bar padding?

Who's talking about roll bar padding? I'm not. You could'nt get paint on it without removing the glass right? Then cover it with a wrap like I did. The first race in Boise after doing mine I had a dozen racers come up and said they were going to do it to theirs.

Thanks, Lee. I catch your drift now, but that doesn't keep the bars from rusting. But I appreciate the suggestion, sir, I just misunderstood what you were driving at. :D
