Dave Birdwell Jul 25th, 08, 5:16 PM Well, the first problem you have is, you have an invalid VIN. There was no plant "V". The plants that built Chevelles in 1970 were as follows..
A-Atlanta
B-Baltimore
F-Flint
K-Kansas City
L-Van Nuys
R-Arlington
1-Oshawa
If the last 6 of the VIN is correct, it would be very late to be a real L78 car. Do some checking to see if you can determine what the real VIN is. Good Luck!
704EVER Jul 25th, 08, 6:13 PM With a 126XXX vin this would have to be an 11 A/B KC car or 10 B/C Van Nuys car if it were a true L78. The real vin would help as Dave has stated.
ls6ragtop Jul 25th, 08, 6:18 PM Actually Dave, Oshawa was designated by the #1 as a plant code, not O as stated. Otherwise all good!
Chris
JUSTIN1970BALDWIN Jul 25th, 08, 9:26 PM Sorry guys my 1970 insurance card was wroong it is a B
136170B126682, found that on the pa registration, last known address was new jersey that i found.
JUSTIN1970BALDWIN Jul 25th, 08, 9:29 PM With a 126XXX vin this would have to be an 11 A/B KC car or 10 B/C Van Nuys car if it were a true L78. The real vin would help as Dave has stated.
what does that mean??? 11 a/b kc and or 10 b/c van nuys (where they were built i guess?
Dave Birdwell Jul 25th, 08, 11:29 PM You're right, Chris. Slight oversight on my part.
What does that mean?? The L78 option was discontinued in a memo to the dealers dated sometime around Thanksgiving, 1969. The last of the L78 cars were being built the week of 12A to 12B production. The earliest known LS6 car is a 12B car built in Baltimore. Therefore, we know that this is the week of production that tells us about when the last L78 car was being built, and when the first LS6 was built. This means that it is very highly unlikely that a car built after 12B is a real L78 car. IF your car was B126xxx that would give it a known build date of about 12B, meaning that is was possible that it COULD be an L78 car.
Now all you have to do is try to find the car. Apparently no one around here knows of the car, or they haven't chimed in yet.
Good luck finding it!
Dave Birdwell Jul 25th, 08, 11:43 PM I found some more info for you. The First "Pilot" LS6 that was built 12B, actually on 12-09-69, has a VIN of B127012, so it is feasible that your car could very well indeed have been an L78 car.
RixLS6 Jul 26th, 08, 5:17 AM Unbelievable, but I have a copy of the buildsheet for this very car (136370B126682). It shows a build date of December 8 and is indeed an L78, and also shows an M21, AM/FM radio and more. It does show the rear gear ratio was code KK, which would be a 4.10.
I don't remember where I got the buildsheet copy from.
I e-mailed you a copy of the sheet Justin.

Nice work Dave, when I looked at Balt.'s numbers I never imagined the 126XXX would make it before a 12B. What a coincidence Rick has the build sheet. This may be the last L78 ever built! Now if the car turns up that would be really special.
EdCarpenter Jul 26th, 08, 10:56 AM Justin,
I am finishing up my fathom blue L78, 4 spd, 4:10 posi, that looks to be similar optioned to the one you listed. It was built at the Baltimore plant 11/20/69 and was 4757 vin # behind yours.
Rick,
Great work on the buildsheet. Now we need to find the car.
RixLS6 Jul 26th, 08, 12:47 PM Ed,
They must have been busy with L78 Chevelles on 11-20-69 in Baltimore. I have a buildsheet that is for a convertible L78 built that day also. It's red with red bench and M-21.
043164 is on the top left corner of it's sheet.
Justin look on the left side of the buildsheet copy I sent you. It has the name of the company that faxed it.
Rick
Dave Birdwell Jul 26th, 08, 3:46 PM Wow! Good find, Rick!
RixLS6 Jul 26th, 08, 4:12 PM I hope it's helpful in finding the car again for him.
Rick

Rick,
Mine is 042926.
JUSTIN1970BALDWIN Jul 26th, 08, 6:17 PM Wow Rick got your email thanks, Do you think you had the car at one time or were looking to buy it something? I mean hey if you own it, its not like im going to hunt you down, lol.
Any phone numbers or emails on the back or side of it.
RixLS6 Jul 26th, 08, 7:18 PM Justin,
I probably was looking to buy the car , or at least was trying. I don't own it, but would like to.
I sent you a reply e-mail with more info that I see on the sheet.
Ed,
Your L78 was close in sequence to the build of that ragtop. I'd love to have been on the line that day watching.
JUSTIN1970BALDWIN Jul 27th, 08, 7:26 PM Rick Says He Was Looking To Buy The Car A Couple Years Ago Which Was Amazing, I Actually Tore The Build Sheet Trying To Get It Off The Gas Tank, Its A Match A Really Just Boggles My Mind.
Anyway Right Now Im Stuck Again, On The Side Of The Build Sheet Rick Was Faxed By This Company Full Spectrum
Full Spectrum Is On The Piece Of Paper The Build Sheet Is On, We Are Trying To Figure Out The Fax Number But The Date Was March Of 2005 So Im Not Too Far Behind Her, It Has Been Like 10 Or More Years So Its Better Than Nothing.
I Just Wish Rick Could Remeber Where The Car Was That He Was Trying Yo Buy, Not Sure Why He Collects Build Sheets But Anyway Im Still Looking For It.
Dave Birdwell Jul 27th, 08, 7:34 PM We collect build sheets so that we have a database to compare to when someone asks if another sheet is real or fake.
JUSTIN1970BALDWIN Sep 17th, 08, 7:32 PM WELL ITS SEPT AND FOUND THE LAST OWNER AS OF 2000.
I talked to the guy that actually bought the car in 1995 for 10,000 he drove it from PA to NJ him and some buddies restored it and sold it to this most recent guy for 25,000 in the year 2000 with 55,000 miles on it so we are close hope to see her soon!!
ss1970chev454 Sep 18th, 08, 7:28 AM thanks for the update. I have been following this thread and hoped that you would be reunited with your car. hopefully it will be affordable too. good luck.
LeoP Sep 18th, 08, 7:52 AM Justin, You are one lucky person, I see that you got more info from the folks on this site for free than you got for the other money you spent on any other site. Might be a good time to sign up for a membership here, don'tcha think?
Good luck in your hunt for that car.
john5469 Sep 21st, 08, 12:22 PM Justin, hope you can track that car down. Glad to know it didn't get crushed!!!
greg2001 Sep 22nd, 08, 9:33 PM LOL you guys kill me...The fax copy came from me...The company name is "Full Spectrum Lending," which was a division of Countrywide Home Mortgages where I worked..should be a 804 number...I think Rick had me fax him the sheet..I don't believe he was trying to buy the car, but I might be wrong..If you ask me...I think he just wanted a copy of the sheet
The car in question, if it is the one I'm thinking of has been discussed on here before by me (around 2002/2003 or so) and the person who gave me the sheet..Kevin Bierman (sp?) (musclecarkid)..I believe this is the sheet which didn't have the "dual RPO codes" (Z25/Z15) on it...He sent me the sheet back in 2003 or so...I believe he helped restore it and knew the owner..
If you want to know more give me a call...804-314-7732..you can also do a search for my screename and find out more info
Greg
BTW...always remember..past assumptions..aren't present realities...lol
DaleM Sep 22nd, 08, 10:59 PM I believe this is the sheet which didn't have the "dual RPO codes" (Z25/Z15) on it... Z15 and Z25 were 454 Equipment and 396 Equipment codes. How could it possibly have both?
greg2001 Sep 22nd, 08, 11:20 PM  Z15 and Z25 were 454 Equipment and 396 Equipment codes. How could it possibly have both?
Dale,
During the course of researching the L78/LS6 timeline, the buildsheets which were surfacing from around late Nov (somewhere around 11C) til 12B for L78's were showing 2 things..Baltimore cars (since shown to not be the only plant producing very late L78's) and in the RPO section (where the options are spelled out) the dual codes of "Z25" "Z15". The cars were definitly assembled with the L78 though, as that was the only engine listed on the sheets.
I presented the hypothesis of the plant having a basic idea of the number of L78 orders in process, but not a firm VIN number to changeover...The premise is that the plant would have not known the exact VIN of the switch, so they began coding the sheets for both, in an attempt to facilitate a smooth switchover. Especially since some equipment is the same for both engines. The sheets which we were able to find supported this idea, and when Kevin presented the sheet discussed here, we felt we had validated the hypothesis..as well as could be expected...since this sheet is dated 12-8 (1 day before the "pilot" LS6) and is missing the "Z15" code...
In essence the plant knew the VIN of the last L78 order and there was no further need for the "dual RPO codes" being used..hence they reverted back to the standard 396 code...This is the latest L78 sheet located to my knowledge..
Please go back and search for threads from 2002/2003 on this...as they are more detailed I think..
Call me if you can
Of course some records from the plant might validate (or not ;) some notions of first or last as the case might be;)
