: Help me select a solid cam: UDHarold, others?
OUChevelleSS Nov 30th, 04, 6:13 PM This is for my 454 combo that I'm looking at
Mark IV 454 14015445 casting ('77 truck block, 4-bolt main)
bored to 468CID
stock GM cast crank
stock GM rods from block
ARP bolts/studs ETC
Brodix Race Rites, 115cc with CNC chamber, assembled
SRP 139515 (23cc dome, should achieve 10.2:1 SCR)
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake (alum.)
Muncie 5-spd=M22 ratios with .68OD
4.10 rear with posi
true dual exhaust with headers and Hooker Aerochambers, 3'' piping.
Unsure what size headers I need though, and looking at a Holley double-pumper due to gearing and manual tranny, prolly 850CFM (HP 950??)
My main concern first off is safety. I need vaccuum to run, on the street, my power brakes and steering. I also will run A/C in summer. Secondly, I need to keep compression to run 93 octane. The car, like I said, is a street car, daily driver. I'm not too concerned with mileage though. Looking for good power and of course, a good lope.
Can anyone help me finalize the few things I'm unsure of, and select the cam? I'm looking for a solid flat-tappet, and I'm hoping UDHarold will chime in, since I'm wanting one of his cams. Maybe someone could refresh me with Harold's number and if he's at his office right now. I would think it may be easier to do things over the phone but would hate to take his time and have my phone drop the call in my dorm room redface.gif
I appreciate all help I can get...pretty much last thing I need to know to get things going. Any suggestions on decking, quench, etc. too? Should I get smaller (110cc chambers) to bring me to 10.7:1 SCR or would that matter much? Thanks all! I'll be here if anyone wants to bat around a few things or if I need to clarify anything, etc.
427L88 Nov 30th, 04, 9:22 PM You know which cam I'd recommend! But hopefully Harold does drop by, it'd be nice to hear if that cam ( the A3) on a 112 LSA ( like the roller version) would be a nice fit here.
I wouldn't take compression up much more at all, imho, unless you jump to a 255+@.050 sized cam which, of course, won't idle well at all even on a wide 114 lsa. The A3 cam shouldn't lose much going to a 112 lsa. It rips. Great cam, great durability ( so far, knock on wood!)
69shovel&90454SS Nov 30th, 04, 10:18 PM That is an extremely good street/strip big block parts list. Some fine tuning on the machining specs and a good cam and your making an honest 550hp on 93 pump gas.
I would say keep the chambers at 115 with the 23cc dome pistons and true zero deck the block and use a Felpro .039 compressed gasket and you will be at 10.5 compression.
If you can spare the extra expense you might want to consider going to a solid street roller. I run the Comp XR274R custom ground on a 108 lobe center installed straight up in the Chevelle and it is amazingly mild on the street and fine for the power brakes and it pulls hard.
The Airgap and Holley HP950 DP is an awesome setup also with very crisp throttle response.
There really are a ton of cam choices out there so I hope UDHarold stops by to help you out.
OUChevelleSS Nov 30th, 04, 10:21 PM Thanks for the tips. I'm glad the combo sounds good, I want to be sure to do it right the first time around. I hope too Harold drops by and maybe some people want to bat around more ideas.
OUChevelleSS Dec 1st, 04, 3:15 AM I can't seem to find Harold's number anywhere. I'm so awful with the search function (how sad is that). Does anyone have it? Anyone know if he's available?
Any more tips, too?
Thanks all..

Wolfplace Dec 1st, 04, 11:47 PM Hi Taylor,
Nice lookin list of parts, some of the parts almost look like someting I would suggest :D
Glad you settled on the combo, I think you will be very happy with it graemlins/beers.gif
On the cam, Harold's 402A3 would work great & I would run it as is on a 110.
Numbers are: 276/284, 243/251, .586/.600, 110 sep
OUChevelleSS Dec 2nd, 04, 12:09 AM Hey Mike,
Yea, the list sure looks familiar eh?
Any suggestions on the header size, i.e. tubes and such?
Also everyone likes an estimate of power..got a friendly guess? Hehe.
Thanks all.

1 7/8"
Never enough :D
OUChevelleSS Dec 5th, 04, 5:49 PM Hey guys, I was wondering, anyone have an idea on what sort of fuel pump would be good with this combo OR what Harold would reccommend? It seems he likes to reccommend a Holley Blue or 2 so I'm not sure. Haven't gotten around to calling him yet, not with finals week sneaking up on me and whatnot..
Thanks.

Two Holley blues, Not the best on a street car.
Aeromotive A1000 with the carb return style regulator.
1/2" (-8) line- tank to regulator, -6 reg to carb.
Use manufacturer recommended filters or equivalent.
Change tank p/u to 1/2" too.
950hp seems to be the consensus around here.
1 7/8 or 2" will be fine. Bigger cam, may want bigger headers.
I'd go with the 276/284 on a 110 or a 280/288 on a 112 solid. A lot of people are anxious to see this combo....
OUChevelleSS Dec 8th, 04, 1:13 PM Just wondering if anyone else would like to take a shot at this or if UDHarold is around and wants to help out..I think I am going to purchase parts next week. Thanks for any last minute thoughts/input..
UDHarold Dec 8th, 04, 1:55 PM Taylor,
With the info on the engine, and the requirements for P/B and A/C, I'd stay with 427L88's suggestion of the Lunati 402A3LUN cut on a 112 LSA. You have to be and tell them it's on a 112, or else you will get the 110. It should make about as much BHP as stock rods and crank will stand.....
A Carter 172-gph mech pump with 1/2" line is just perfect with this combo.
Specs are 276/284 at .020, 243/251 at .050, .586/.600 valve lift, and 110 LSA.
It has been my most popular BBC street cam for about 15 years.

10secBu Dec 8th, 04, 2:09 PM Harold, please check your e-mail.
CDN SS Dec 8th, 04, 2:50 PM Nice combo your on the right track I have same pistons and heads with upgraded crank and rods in a 427 .060 and thru my engine builder Harold reccomended his old UltraDyne 285/295 .....245/254 @.050 110lsa .630 in a solid roller for my combo ......border line with my power brakes installing vacuum pump
And yes with zero deck CR will be closer to 10.5 than 10.2
OUChevelleSS Dec 8th, 04, 3:22 PM Thanks, sounds great, then. One last thing, Harold, if you still read this (well, two or three).
Do you reccommend any specific lifters to go with your cams?
Also, the cam in my 350 (a Crane or Comp) was treated, as per my machinist/engine builder, with some sort of coating or something--maybe the nitride treatment? Anyway it was supposed to make it 'last forever' and not wipe a lobe and such. I think this is the reason my cam did not wipe with my improper break-in (which by all accounts I read here should have torn the cam apart). It wasn't expensive so would be cheap insurance, unless you or someone else would advise me to stay away.
Lastly, what springs should I run? Or would I find more info/specs on the cam on the Lunati website?
Thanks again all, I really appreciate it..
