: aftermarket heads and spring cups??
ovelle Feb 23rd, 04, 10:59 AM spring seats are 1.625 springs are 1.550 do i need some type of spring cup or are they self alligning?these are cast iron heads.sales tells me that if it were an alluminum head that you would need spring cups so as not to eat through the alluminum, were the cast iron will not be affected by spring tension...will i be fine with just a thin shim?

Fried_Guy Feb 23rd, 04, 11:32 AM I've asked this quesntion, and here's the reply I got. http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=018177
Others have told me not to worry about it on iron heads as long as there isn't too much clearance. I've yet to find what "too much clearance" is.
EDIT: I'm using an isky retainer with a +.060" height and an inky spring locator with a .045" height. That way I can still us mini shims to get even spring height.
godsend Feb 23rd, 04, 4:35 PM If you find a part number i want it to. same problem.
Fried_Guy Feb 23rd, 04, 6:39 PM Try these:
part number 965-VSL or 970-VSL

godsend Feb 24th, 04, 3:41 AM 1.625 with 1.550 springs. stock canfield 310cc
Wolfplace Feb 24th, 04, 2:25 PM I read that part, there are about a hundred different 1.550 spring combinations out there.
To give you a part number for your spring seat I need to know what the id of your inner spring is & the od of the bottom part of your guide is.
Or the part number of the spring so I can look it up.
You can email it if you like or post it & I or someone here will look it up for you.
As far as I know they do not make a cup that is 1.625 od for the 1.550 spring. The smallest is about 1.680. You need to use a locator that locates the id of the inner spring
godsend Mar 3rd, 04, 3:40 PM 1-3/4 Cups with 9/16 guide.
Competition Congo Roller springs.
Are that enough info?

Comp 4776 should work. It is .570 guide id, .790 inner spring id & 1.550 od.
If this is the wrong spring id go here:
Spring Locators (http://www.compcams.com/Technical/Catalogs/106-03/HTML/356.asp)
ovelle Mar 4th, 04, 11:00 AM for a 480 lift on a cast iron head, will it be catastrophic or damaging to not run the spring cups.this is not a wild cam(280h)and will not be spun passed 6500.they provided everything for an easy assembly.i dont want to change the geometry by adding a .050 spring cup.

Wolfplace Mar 4th, 04, 1:00 PM I prefer not to run a performance spring against the head but you can.
I would prefer a spring locator but, you can put a hardened .015 shim under the spring just to protect the head & it will not effect the height enough to hurt unless you are borderline now.
Why not just get +.050 locks or +.050 retainers & use the right locators for your springs?
Also, why the 1.550 springs with a 480 hyd cam??
What spring is it?
