: 1972 Chevelle SS454 on ebay
lcmc Jul 23rd, 08, 4:57 PM Just wondering what these cars sell for. I have been looking for one for some time now but everything out there is a clone. This one seems right. What's it worth?

bigskycountry Jul 23rd, 08, 5:16 PM This car looks to have had a nicely done restoration. The documentation, the M22 four speed, and its color only add to its charm. I will bet that the dealer will be asking around 40k for this car. I would feel better as a buyer closer to the high twenty, 30k mark. Having made that statement, could I build that car for $28,000? :noway:
704EVER Jul 23rd, 08, 5:22 PM Agreed, the car looks nicely done. This dealer has some of the best ads I've seen. If you can afford it, it's always cheaper to buy them done.

You are right on the money. He is asking just over $40K. I made him an offer, my 69Z for his car plus $10K. He's thinking even up. My Z is a very nice driver restored 6 years ago with Canadian documentation and all numbers drivetrain.
Carguy00 Jul 23rd, 08, 5:47 PM Nice looking car. I'd bet they want about 40k for it also which means they paid about 28k for it. Which means if you look hard enough there will be one just like it out there for 28k abd you can save some money. Also doesn't the trunk stripes look off center?

Dave Birdwell Jul 23rd, 08, 10:22 PM Very nice car, a few things incorrect under the hood, but nice and presentible overall. Real documentation, but I would want to see the block stamp to verify it's authenticity. If you were paying to have the car done, you couldn't do it for $40K. Tell me about your Z28, I may have a buyer for it...
lcmc Jul 23rd, 08, 10:34 PM Dave.....I sent you an email with details and pics of my Z.
mmurphy77 Jul 23rd, 08, 10:52 PM I'd like to have that studio takes pictures of my car there just for me to have! I thought the build sheet was curious with RPO D88 and RPO ZR8 White stripe package. Never heard of ZR8 White stripe package. Could this have originally had a pinstripe? I also thought it was weird how the remote mirror bezel was practically mounted on top of the "SS" door emblem (called mass production).
1972convss454 Jul 23rd, 08, 11:15 PM I would say buy it if you like it. The drivers side mirror looks a little off but if its a number matching "W" code you could correct the minor stuff and have what I consider as one of the last great Chevelles. I believe with only around 5K "W" code '72's made they can only go up in value. As stated you could not buy a project and restore it for 40K and you may could buy one for less but to get it right you would probably spend with the price of the car and restoring it to being correct would be way over 40 grand. I have a '72 "W" code that is not going to be number matching and when I'm finished with it I would not take any less than 35K.
But to answer your question the "real" 454 cars have been going for 30 to 35K from what I have seen.
aso544 Jul 25th, 08, 11:49 PM Is the chrome dual snorkel cleaner correct? I habe never seen a chrome one and I thought they were last used in 1971?
The location on the build sheet for the air cleaner is distorted so I can not see what code was used.

Chris R Jul 28th, 08, 12:29 PM Werent the valve covers painted engine color in 72 instead of chrome? I was also wondering if the dual snorkel air cleaner was correct myself also.
kettbo Jul 28th, 08, 12:48 PM I can't imagine a 270 horse 454 with 3.31 and M-22 HD 2.20 close ratio gearbox as being very exciting...
Wouldn't you think 3.55 minimum gearing with the M-22?

the VCs were painted & the air cleaner is NOT correct.
George, the stock 72 LS5 4 speed clicked off low 14 sec runs in '72 with those hockey pucks they called tires.
and we know that headers & cam & intake change was most of what stood in the way of low 13s-high 12s:D
we all know that the 270 hp thing was a joke due to the 'new' SAE NET rating system. :(
