This is a regular SBC 350 with the standard mods. In a 71 Camino. The problem I am having is and oil leak after I did an in car cam swap (engine remained in the car) since then I have had a pestering oil leak, with attempts of silicon around the front of the oil pan and the timing chain cover meet. Thats where it best appears to be leaking. Well I have had some time off school and pulled the motor and thought I would fix the problem once and forall the right way. I pulled the motor and cleand everything (big oily mess) I put on a new oil pan gasket and oil pan and the timing chain was replaced a few months back (thinking that was the cause of the leak) My way of thinking was I could have bent either when doin the cam swap. Well when all is said and done I still have the leak! Very frustrating  Then on the way home from bringing the car from my shop to the house I had more problems, upon startup my oil pressure guage appeared to be reading about 10 psi higher than usual, but it slowly went back to usual as the motor warmed up. but on the way home I went to turnaround and the car was idling a little low say 500-750 rpm and my oil pressure drops down to 4psi or lower upon seeing that i raise the rpms and get it back up to 20psi. A few min. later I was caught at a train where i sat for at least 5 min. idling in nuetral at 1000 rpm with a constant 20 psi (usual) after the train I slowly acclerate everythings good go a little ways get a lil rpm (4000- 5000) and look down oil pres. guage is pegged at 100 psi (never done that before)
SO as u can tell I got some problems first and foremost is oil press. Second is that damn leak. Any ideas or help is ever so welcome. Thanks

Silicone in pump pickup and silicone in pump spring/valve.

Are you setup with mechanical or electric pressure gauge. If electric replace the sending unit they can leak and spray nearly anywhere. Making leak detection difficult at best ask me how I know. graemlins/clonk.gif

Look on the front of the block down by the fuel pump there sould be 2 bolt holes the upper one should have a short bolt in it or it will leak oil. Hope thats the problem and nothing else.

daveseitz I have a mech. pres. guage.

CNC: I have the upper bolt hole plugged but not the lower do I need that one too?

Godsend: have you had this happen before? Would a piece of cork pan gasket do that too?

I siliconed the pan on the outside trying to seal it up.

Later on today I hooked up an auxilary oil pres. guage and my guage proved to be accurate. what seemed to happen was coincidently everytime my oil psi dropped I would be slowing down to turn into a driveway or something similair and my rpms would drop along with my psi. So I believe I can say that my oil PRESSURE problem is fixed now just my leak. thanks
