: What size cam?
lucky3 Oct 9th, 04, 9:20 PM I have a 68 chevelle with a m-21 4-sp, 12bolt posi 4:10 gears. Its a 355 with sportsman II heads, proform 750 carb, performer rpm cam and intake, dynomax headers, and flowmaster 2 1/2in exhaust. I hate the rpm cam and was wondering what you guys would suggest. I drive it about 2000miles a yr and would like to take it to the track a couple of times.
bigjimzlll Oct 9th, 04, 9:34 PM yea..that RPM cam really bites...are you opposed to a solid? In a hydraaulic the xe 274 looks good. Is your CR around 10-1? I ran an xs282s10 solid in a simular combo...real strong
slpin Oct 9th, 04, 9:38 PM you could try this cam.
im pretty much using the same cam, but on a 396. seems to work really well for me... (my time was with way too big 2" primaries headers, 3.31 gears, and 9.5:1 compression)

if you decide on it, buy it off mike (wolfplace), he could save you money on it!
lucky3 Oct 9th, 04, 10:05 PM Yah my comp is around 10.1 and no i'm not opposed to running a solid cam, i just want something that will give me the most pwr but be able to drive it everyday.
Nickel333 Oct 10th, 04, 12:45 AM well the good news is you drive a stick so stall speed dosent matter. With the intake/carb/heads/gears id look for somthing that will match your compression, and top out around 6,500-6,800.
Id also make it a dual pattern because the SP II's are known for having a good intake and weaker exaust.
Id go with a Solid Herbert grind, 280/288 on the seat, 244/252@.050, .518/.536 on a 106, my neighbor just fired it up in his wifes 350 camaro with pretty much the same motor, and it sounds nasty!!! I also seem to be liberal on cams compared to everyone else so get some more info and make an educated decision,
my advice..... Stay away from the Comp XE cams that will probably be recommended, you may gain a few lb/ft but ive read about more of those damn cams going flat that id ever care to talk about. Just a thought
427L88 Oct 10th, 04, 6:44 AM I like that Herbert grind, 106 LSA is a bit nasty, but doable with a clutch if you have a vacuum can or hydroboost for power brakes.
Reed has some nice small-ish solid cams as well.
T264UL on the inatke and T270UL on the exhaust looks about right...

Lunati 301A9 hydraulic is a nice small cam that'll wake it up, or you could go as far as the 401A6 solid!

I'd stay in the high 220/mid 230 @ .050 duration for a hyd and mid 230 to mid 240 for a solid cam.
lucky3 Oct 10th, 04, 11:49 AM I just don't want to have to use a canister for my pwr brakes.
N2097ss Oct 10th, 04, 11:54 AM Just my two cent's.......
I've not had any trouble with my XE274 Comp cam, but Mike @ Wolfplace told me he doesn't like them either. I believe he said that their custom grinds are fine but they don't make the standard grinds themselves anymore. He suggested UD Harold and Isky as calls he would make. Once again I've had no issues with mine in 3 years. Hope this helps.
pdq67 Oct 11th, 04, 12:56 PM IMHO, if you are concerned about the cam going flat OR excess valvetrain noise and wear, then drop back to the older CC HE and Magnum cams!!
Or go with somebody else that isn't using quite as severe STOA ramps thing...

427L88 Oct 11th, 04, 2:52 PM Then stay at 110 or 112 LSA. Another way, I'd go for the Lunati A8, not A9 if you want to ensure brake usage, A9 should do it if its installed +6 advanced, but A8 are the kind of specs you are looking for.
The Herbert grind, while stout, will not run brakes. It's the 106 lsa and the fact it's over 250 duration. Thats alot for street. Those specs on a 110 lsa might, and likely would on a 112 lsa or 114 lsa.
For 2000 miles a year, and trying to get the most out of a cam swap, Chad has had good results with the Crane small solid. A 276/286 Lunati would be about right as well. Both wider lsa cams, yet offering some intensity over the rpm. In the new Comp XS line, the 274 should be fine with brakes, while the stouter 282 might not. IF they offered those on a 112 LSA, I'd say the 282XS on a 112 is perfect. ( and why I prefer the Crane and Lunati offerings - 112 lsa.).
With the 4.11s you will CERTAINLY, WITH NO DOUBT IN MY MILITARY MIND, appreciate the rev-ability of a solid cam in short order.
HPHs.
